SG105 for home use

I would like to replace my old 110 utm for a new SG105.

But is it still possible for the new utm to run the home license? (edit: by home license, I also mean the home software).
My other question is if I replace the HDD for a SSD, is UTM9 trim ready or should I make adjustments for trim?

  • You would have to wipe the device and install the "Software Appliance" version of the UTM firmware ---  but it should work.

UTM 9 has supported TRIM for some time.  There are several SG-series appliances that ship with SSDs.

  • Great thanks for your reply, I knew trim was supported. But is it enabled on default? Or do I need to add "discard" to /etc/fstab?
  • it should be on by default..as Bruce said SG units shp with ssd's in some configs...however you would have to reinstall so the software could sense that an ssd was present and enable the appropriate configurations.

  • Note that the new SG105 appears to have 2GB RAM, which is the same as the recent 120's and maybe 110's.

  • Any guide on how to do this?  I would also like to run a SG 105 at home.  Thanks
  • Why don't you install the Home Edition on some custom Hardware? This solution would be cheaper and easier to customize as well...

  • I'm guessing because these small units will always work with the latest UTM software (custom hardware, there can be kernel changes that might make something become unsupported), and these small ones are pretty quiet and capable.

There is no official "guide."  Basically, you would download the Software Appliance ISO (not the one for official Sophos appliances), wipe the drive on the Sophos appliance (you must do this step), then load from the software appliance ISO.  Note that doing this makes the appliance unable to, ever again, work under the Sophos Appliance Hardware license ... also, you may or may not have the Ethernet interfaces detected in a different order than is shown on the appliance case itself (not a big deal, but be aware of it).

  • By the way... Have you tried to modify the /etc/asg file on your SG 105? Maybe with changing there the ASG_VERSION="***" makes it not nescescairy to newly setup your UTM?
