VM UTM and vmtools how to get working

Hi,
I have built a UTM on VM esxi 5.1 using the normal software ISO.
The VM host recognises that the installation has its own VM tools, but while they are shown to be running, they are not working.

On the same VM host I have a SUM running successfully.
The UTM has been running for over 24 hours, it has been upgraded to the  latest version and restarted a number of times.
I have configured VM tools in the UTM.

What am I missing?

All advice gratefully accepted.

    Hi Ian,

    What tests have you run? What symptoms are you seeing?

    Two most common functions of vmtools (only one's I can usually see evidence of when working) are the guest shutdown/reboot functions and the memory ballooning.

    The shutdown's easy enough to confirm in that just keep the console open into the UTM vm and trigger the shutdown through the vSphere client. If the shutdown starts right away, you know the tools are working.

    Ballooning is harder to test unless you can heavily overload the host.

    Hi Andrew,
    I have to kill the vsphere session to close the console or shutdown the utm from webadmin , the mouse has no affect outside of the vm guest console.
    That is a no tools installed behavior.

    That also sounds like the console has exclusive control of the mouse. Maybe dumb to ask but Ctrl-Alt doesn't release the mouse?

    Before we go any further, I am not a novice and also not an expert at VMs, I do build them for work.
    And all indications I get are the same as vm tools not being applied.

    Ctrl Alt sort of releases the mouse, but you have no control within the space of what you can do with the mouse other than move it around.

    Didn't say you weren't Ian. Had to ask because I've made more then my fair share of dumb mistakes brought on by what I assumed were expert hands, usually my own. [;)]

    Just had a look at my setup under VMware 5 and I'm noticing that I have to Ctrl-Alt to release the mouse under any of my Linux VM's in text mode (CentOS and UTM 9.2) with tools installed but my Window's VM's don't require it. I've always assumed that was normal as all my vm's do that. Difference is that after Ctrl-Alt, I have full control of my mouse on the machine running the viclient.

    Hi Andrew,
    I just sindicating I am not a complete vm dummy, but nowhere near an expert.
    With using ctrl + alt I can't move the mouse from the console.

    The issue has me puzzled, I have built the SUM on a VM a number of times and the release issue only stayed for a restart or two.

    That one has me puzzled too because I've built numerous linux VM's (mix of Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS & Gentoo) both in my home lab (ESXi 5 and Workstation 10) & work (ESXi 4). Ctrl-Alt always worked to release the mouse regardless of vmtools status.

    Only time Ctrl-Alt ever failed for me was when the vSphere client lost focus (I run dual screens so oft have have a dozen windows open) but that's obviously not the case here. I also thought the Ctrl-Alt was intercepted by the vmware client software before it hit the guest?
