Network Security License on ASG220

Our Network Security license for the ASG220 is about to expire in a few weeks.

According to the description: "This subscription enables the Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) incl. pattern updates, DoS/Flood Protection, SSL & IPsec based VPN and Remote Access, Advanced Routing, WAN Link Balancing and detailed Network Security Reporting."

Does this mean that if we do not renew the license the VPN (and the rest of the services in the quote above) will stop working?

TIA

  • That's correct. You need a valid license for these services.

    Sophos user, admin and reseller.
    Private Setup:

    • XG: HPE DL20 Gen9 (Core i3-7300, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD) | XG 18.0 (Home License) with: Web Protection, Site-to-Site-VPN (IPSec, RED-Tunnel), Remote Access (SSL, HTML5)
    • UTM: 2 vCPUs, 2GB RAM, 50GB vHDD, 2 vNICs on vServer (KVM) | UTM 9.7 (Home License) with: Email Protection, Webserver Protection, RED-Tunnel (server)
  • That's correct. You need a valid license for these services.

    Thank you for clarifying.

I can understand the reasoning behind subscriptions for Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam, and their like, but I'm a puzzled as to why the VPN would stop working.

Seems to me like this "feature" makes the Sophos much more expensive than its competitors.  My SonicWALL and ZyWALL, for example, provide IPSec VPN without the need for subscription.
  • If none of the other items in that list are needed, then, yes, it's an expensive VPN solution related to the non-Cisco/WatchGuard/etc. solutions.  You should discuss this with your reseller.

  • Thank you, Bob, for your reply.
  • Bob,

Doesn't the essentials edition (no licensed features) still provide PPTP & L2TP VPN capability? You don't get full IPSEC support (needed for Cisco EasyVPN, etc) or the SSL VPN, but there's at least some VPN support?
  • Correct, Drew - you get PPTP and L2TP Remote Access, but no Site-to-Site at all.
