ASG220 rev4 fan mod

I just score a cheap ASG220 rev4 from ebay to use at home. It seems to work on with v9 on 1GB.

However there is one problem. The thing is so noisy even in my rack in the garage [:(] I have yet to open the box. Does anyone have suggestion (or have done it themselves) on how to quieten down this thing!

    Those fans are there for a reason....

    I suppose you could rig it up with a liquid cooling system like the overclocker guys use.

    BTW, you can have up to 2GB of RAM in the Rev. 4 (the only hardware difference is the paint job and the RAM that ships in them).  Of course, this does void any support or warranty on the unit, but since you are using it in a home lab, etc. that won't matter to you.

    If there's room, you could put a larger heatsink and might get by with slower fans, but 1U systems are almost always loud.

    Your only choice would be to buy lower noise 40mm fans.  You would have to measure to verify the maximum thickness of fan you can install, and check to see if you need 3 pin or 4 pin fans.  You won't fit anything taller than a 40mm fan, and given the risk of electric shock, I would not recommend replacing the power supply fan.

    First and foremost...  Only do this if you want to void your warranty.

    For some idiotic reason Sohpos/Astaro doesn't use PWM fans.  I couldn't bear it on my old UTM220 either.  I replaced the stock 10k+ RPM units with ones that were half the speed.  I monitored the core temp by temporarily booting off of a LiveCD.  I ran prime95 on it to fully load it and tested it before an after.  The slower fans only increased the CPU temp be a couple degrees C.

    I used Sunon 40x20mm MagLev fans (part number MB40201VX-G99) from FrozenCPU.

    I'm sure that the engineers design these for a worst case install in a hot dirty environment.  In a conditioned office, the insane fans aren't needed.

    BTW, the new fans that I got aren't silent but they aren't screamers like the stock ones.
