UTM sizing / Which Appliance

Hi all,

I am interested in the UTM appliances. However, I am not quite sure which appliance would be suitable. Is there a sizing guide somewhere? I had a look around but couldn't find anything.

I am looking for an appliance for a SMB, ~80 Desktops, ~10 Laptops and ~10 Mobile Devices, ~6 Servers.

Most of the traffic will be VOIP outbound and little internet and mail in/out.

In terms of licensing, it's also not very clear what the difference between Basic and Full is for each module. 

I would like to get an idea about sizing before approaching a local partner.

Also, can somebody give me a ballpark figure for what I would be looking at in terms of hardware and licensing?

    This is an assignment for your Sophos reseller.

    Not the quantity of your devices is the most important thing,  but the behavior of your user.

    So please contact a reseller and they will be able to answer your question.

    The design of the deployment, features and configuration influence the sizing needs.  Also consider the life-cycle of the solution for your environment and how it meshes with the life-cycle of the current/announced product lines.

    VoIP phones or softphones on the listed devices?

    A few additional questions to consider (just a start):
    Interface count, speeds and types needed?
    Internet connection speed?
    Remote access/VPNs?
    UTM managed wireless?
    Required features vs optional features?
    Will the UTM sit between the internal users and the on-site servers?
    Minimum expected performance for each client type to/from each destination type?

    For "basic" are you referring to UTM 100/110 with Basic Guard?

    Ballpark/list figures for at least some countries can be found online.  Other countries (at least one anyway) seem to require contacting the domestic distributor.

    If I am your Sophos reseller/partner I would recommend UTM 220 with Full Guard licence, based on information from your first post.


    Ask your partner for further informations, and check if they can supply you with 30-day trial hardware and software licence before putting things into production.

    Please use a new SG210 or SG230.
    This is the new HW Platform. UTM220 is outdated.

    Why a Sophos UTM 220 with Full Guard when the SG210 and SG230 Appliances are available and pricing on them is much better.  Performance on the SG Appliances will be much better.
