Port Forward or Bridge a WAN Router

Hello,

Small Businesses over here in the UK tend to have consumer grade adsl routers with an ethernet port.

Many of these routers have the ability to port forward and others also have the ability to bridge the WAN.

And some have one or more static IP addresses too.

What is the most efficient way of connecting a UTM with one of these routers via ethernet ?

Set the router to port forward all or some ports to the UTM WAN ethernet port or set up the router for bridging to the UTM WAN ethernet port ?

Does it make any difference if the WAN router has one or multiple static IP addresses ?

Does it make a difference if two WAN routers are connected to a UTM to balance the load ?

And how easy would it be to migrate from an adsl router over to a BT Infinity type router ? Has anyone setup BT Infinity with a UTM ?

    Hi, 

    Bridging the router is almost always preferred as it avoids double-NAT and its inherent problems.

    If you have multiple IP addresses, you can add them as 'Additional Addresses' on the WAN interface.

    If you have multiple routers/connections, you can connect them to multiple external interfaces on the UTM, or to a switch and then to a single UTM interface.

    I have a UTM with an ethernet static port.

    What are the steps needed to support a bridged WAN router ? What do you need to change at the UTM end?

    Hi, you just need to configure the WAN interface on the UTM for Ethernet Static, set up the primary IP, and then add any other IPs as "Additional Addresses".

    Hi,

    I'm a UTM newbie so apologies for the extra questions.

    The router i'm attempting to set up has four modes i.e.

        Dynamic IP
        Static IP
        PPPoA/PPPoE
        Bridge Mode

    It is currently setup to PPPoA/PPPoE with user logon details entered. The router connects to the internet and I have port forwards set up to the UTM WAN interface.

    To change the router to bridging do I leave the mode as PPPoA/PPPoE and activate "bridge interface" or do I change the mode to "Bridge Mode" ?

    If I change the router mode to "Bridge Mode" i cannot enter logon details.
    Would I need to setup the UTM WAN interface for PPPoA/PPPoE ? And in that case would i need a separate ethernet port for each router ?

    How many routers do you have. I would have thought you wanted 'bridge mode' and then set your UTM WAN interface to type: PPPoE - one router for each WAN interface. If that doesn't work try setting it to PPPoA. With multiple routers you can play with uplink balancing

    Yes, if you do use PPPoX on the UTM, you would need a separate interface for each WAN.

    I don't know what "Bridge Interface" does on your router; what model is it?
