New HW Setup [less power consumption]

Hi,

currently I am looking for a new HW. Main focus supposed to be power consumption less than 15 watt since the system shall be used privat.

I've stumbled on a lot of possibilities like Intel NUC/Alix apu/Ga-j1900n. Last one will be covered in a different thread therefore I will skip this guy

1. Intel

1. Major drawback of Intel NUC is only one NIC equiped. Is there any chance to get it running with external usb NIC? In case not would it be possible to use a VM in order to trick Sophos UTM9?

2.Additionally, Alix apu sounds really interesting to me because of three NIC's. However, no HDMI besides VGA port equiped. That means the system needs to be installed headless. Is that viable at all ?

I would appreciate if u can make some comments on it.

Hi,

USB NICs are horribly slow (I've seen 1mbps reported), but if you can find one that is supported, you could use it for the management interface and setup VLANs for everything else (WAN, LAN, DMZ, ...)

You'll need a VLAN switch of course.

Headless installation is troublesome; I wouldn't recommend it.

Be sure to get 4GB RAM.
