just lock the cpu to max speed in the bios and you should be good.

5 users, some smartphones... that shouldn't be a problem for the j1900. It seems to be the best compromise regarding to price, power consumption and speed. The J1900 has a TDP of 10 W, and it's a SoC...

And if the Realtek doesn't work right or performance is too bad, this one from Intel should be ok:

Intel PRO/1000 MT Server Adapter, 2x 1000Base-T, PCI-X 133MHz, low profile (PWLA8492MT) with Intel 82546EB chipset

Alternative would be a 1155 or 1150 board with something like a Intel Pentium G2030 or Intel Pentium G3220, I don't think a core i3 is for the requied amount of user necessary.

actually a pent or i3 would be better due to them being DC..you wouldn't have to lock them to max ghz either..

it is working ok.

but it had and still a BIOS issue even with (F2 ).

regarding Realtek LAN, there is no problem with it , even i put 2 other PCI cards , Intel Pro/1000 and D-Link .all has the same result,but Realtek seems a bit faster.

the problem is in drivers , chipset,USB3 and may be others.

this is why desktop motherboards aren't recommended for UTM duties(or any other networking duties).  I would send that board back(if you can) and try another one.  otherwise i would disable usb3, and any other things not being used for UTM services.  Also disable uefi and goto legacy bios.

actually i had it for fun.

in legacy ,it had more problems than efi, regarding boot options .

in legacy you have only one device to boot from,if you have 2 HDs you need to change settings in BIOS to boot from the desired one

 if you want to boot from a usb device you need to enter setup and change priority to USB and exit to save,

but saving is not always correct , you need to do it two or three times.

i tested efi and set a new disk with GPT for the first time.

and all boot options there.

as i said before BIOS is not mature and it is intended for efi.

I installed UTM 9.2 and had no problems with it so far. BIOS Version is still F1, USB 3.0 and UEFI BIOS are enabled.

In a few weeks, I'll start configuration and then I can report performance values regarding the J1900 and the realtek NIC. But first I have to read about configuration of the UTM, when I get time for this.

Here is the short report. So far almost everything is working.

Just a few problems aren't solved. The Sophos UTM is connected to a Fritz!Box Cable Modem with a 52 Mbit/s connection. DHCP is just active on the Sophos UTM. Eth0 (internal) and Eth1 (external) have different IP-Ranges (eth0 192.168.2.x; eth1 192.168.178.x).

The setup looks like this:
Cable provider -> Cable Modem -> Sophos UTM -> WLAN router -> Switch 1 -> Switch 2

The Cable Modem is wired to the Sophos UTM, from which one cable is connected to a WLAN router. Switch 1 is wired to the WLAN router, switch 2 with switch 1.

Download rate at some PCs connected to the local network isn't that good. With some PCs I get constant full speed (6.5 Mb/s), other ones are limited for example to 3.7 Mb/s.

Highest amount of CPU usage was about 32 %. If any download process is active, CPU load is about 20 - 25 %. Therefore I don't think it is a problem regarding the J1900 or the Realtek NICs. Websites are loaded very quickly.

That's strange, I've done some tests. Download speed with a HP Server (HP 330i NICs -> Broadcom chip) is absolutly constant at full speed, no drops while downloading a file with > 1 Gb. When I start the same download from my PC (Realtek NIC, Win 7 x64), which is also conntected by wire to the local network, I get only 3.7 Mb/s. 

If I use a tool instead of the browser to download, I get full speed. Does anyone know what's the problem?

The result is the same, whether I use Firefox or Internet Explorer. Updating NIC driver didn't help either.

If you have a weak CPU, the IPS will be the bottleneck when using HTTP.

Is that 3.7mbps or 3.7MBps??

30 Mbit/s (3.7 Megabyte per second); but cpu load isn't that high. If IPS is turned off, transfer rate via the mentioned PC (Realtek NIC, win 7 x64) is still that slow, using a program instead of the browser to download, I'll get full speed.

Using the browser at the HP Server (OS: Win Server 2012 R2) also results in full speed...

Download speed with a Atheros WLAN chip and Win 8.1 x64 is also good, Intel WLAN chip and Win 7 x64 results in a bad speed like the Realtek NIC with Win 7 x64.

there's a reason we say don't use realteks...or marvels..or much of anything else.  Put in a couple of intels, broadcoms, or 3coms.
