Realtek NICs are considerably slower as they have zero offloading and acceleration features such as Interrupt Coalescing, Checksum Offloading, etc. Not only does this decrease the network througput, it also wastes CPU that could otherwise be used for IPS, A/V, etc.
They sometimes have compatibility problems too. I'm not sure if they have VLAN support.
