Load Balanced Internet Connections

Hello,

Some of our customers can only get relatively slow internet connections due to the distance from the exchange. So the only way of increasing bandwidth is to have multiple internet connections.

Is it possible to connect two internet connections to a UTM and load balance them ?

Or can you setup UTM to route web browsing traffic via one internet connection and use the other internet connection purely for SMTP email.

The UTM's can do both actually. The main gotcha with load balancing is that the improvements are in aggregate, not per connection. For example, you can't load balance two 25Mbps connections and expect to get 50Mbps on a speedtest, you'll only get 25Mbps. However, two people could run the test and each would get 25Mbps (an aggregate of 50Mbps).

The only way I am aware of to get a full 50Mbps out of a pair of 25Mbps connections is something called bonding. It's beyond the scope of what the UTM can do, and the only demonstration I've seen of it is our DSL provider uses bonded 50Mbps DSL to get a 100Mbps service into our neighborhood (to compete with the Cable ISP, which offers 100Mbps out here and is planning a 250Mbps roll out this year).
