VMware 5.0 to 5.5 upgrade

Hello all,

I am about to do an in place upgrade of VMware ESX 5.0 to ESX 5.5.
This Hypervisor is a stand alone box and is not managed by Virtual center.

My upgrade path is to use the VMware CD and let VMware upgrade itself.  Pretty basic.

I'm wondering if anyone has done something like this and if there were any issues with Astaro UTM afterwards. I'm running the latest Prod release.  It was a fresh install of UTM from ISO... not the downloaded appliance.

    There should be no issues with your UTM instance.  Have successfully migrated lab and production environments from 5.0 thru 5.1, 5.5, and 5.5 Update 1.  I will tell you that you will want to read the release notes on the latest version for new/known issues, and it would probably server you well to double check VMware's HCL, KB, and the VMware community forums for issues... for instance there are some reports of the software ISCSI adapter in 5.5. U1 having some PSOD issues.

    I'm not using any external storage.  Its a DL 380 G6  with 8 300 Gig SAS disks in Raid 10.  I have tested ESX the upgrade on a spare server and it was successful. But I cant test to the degree of my prod server which is why I put this out there for comments.

    I had an issue a few years ago when migrating from a Dell 2950 to the HP DL 380.  but I was also moving from ESX 4.x to 5.x.

    My Exchange server (2010) converted fine and ran... but it would not send mail.  It would receive it ok... but would not send.  I actually had to re-build the mail server.  I was not running UTM at the time.

    I should not encounter that again going from 5.0 to 5.5.  The networking is the same and there is no conversion.

    Just an FYI, if you upgrade to ESXI 5.5, do NOT upgrade your VM's from VM7.  If you upgrade a VM from 7 to 10, you will NOT be able to manage it or make any changes using the free Windows-based vSphere Client.  Instead, you'll have to install a trial version of vCenter Server and use its vSphere Web Client to make any changes to a VM10 client.  

    ESXI 5.5 leaves home labs in limbo since the Windows-based client is being discontinued.  Essentially, what VMWare has created is a free hypervisor (ESXI 5.5), but with no free way to manage it (unless you keep installing/re-installing one of the 60-day trials).  A lot of folks have been affected by this, so hopefully VMWare comes up with a solution so people can continue to run and manage their home labs using ESXI.
