Sizing help to choose right UTM appliance model

Wondering what UTM model to choose for a location:


  • 15 Users currently, but will grow
  • 60/5 meg cable connection
  • Small local server (AD DC, file/print sharing), internal use only
  • All services are cloud based
  • No externally facing services of any kind, no expectation for any hosting out of this location in the future
  • Intend to use network and web protection but no other services
  • 1 VPN tunnel back to corporate office (also a Sophos UTM)


Not certain what user count will grow too at this point, but I want to figure for at least 50 users, and if for some reason that points things at a line  between models, please let me know.

In terms of the add-on software, is the best deal going to buy a full bundle even though I only need network/web protection, or will it be cheaper to buy network/web as separate add-ons?

    Hi, a 220 should be fine for 60mbps and 15 users.
    I wouldn't go with a 120 as my experience with Atom CPUs is the IPS is very CPU limited and can't handle more than about 17mbps per stream, and is also limited by the low number of CPU cores, and I believe they still have less RAM.

    I'm not sure about 50 users, but someone else here should know.

    You might also want to consider a second unit in passive failover mode (hot standby), as it is not normally possible to get a same day replacement on hardware failure.

    You should also compare the cost of using commodity hardware (HP, Dell, ...). I like HP as one can pay for 6hr CTR which means if something breaks, it will be fixed within 6 hours (better than 4hr support which just means they'll be there in 4 hours).
    2 units with failover is probably better than 6hr CTR though.

    Hi, HD, and welcome to the User BB!

    While I tend to agree with all of Barry's suggestions, I would urge you to get a recommendation for a good UTM reseller if you don't already have one.  You'll want the reseller to have some skin in the game.  This is especially true if you want to consider a 120 for the first year with the view of upgrading to a bigger unit in a year.

    All you have to do to go from a 120 to a 220 is put a configuration backup in the root directory of a USB memory stick, start the new 220 with the memory stick plugged in and upload the new license for the 220.
