Avira updates often cause CPU to go to 100% - Update - it's cssd!

I've just confirmed this at three different sites where average CPU Usage is 8-to-12%.  Here's one from an instance in Amazon EC2:

Here are the lines from the Up2Date log for when a new Avira pattern was installed during the timeframe of the graph above:

Are any of the beta testers able to reproduce this?

Cheers - Bob

  • Hi Bob, which version is this on?

My beta system isn't on right now, so I can't check it.

  • Doh! I've violated one of the very rules I remind people of all the time. It's 9.109-1.

    Cheers - Bob

Sorry for any short responses.  Posted from my iPhone.
  • Hi Bob,
I checked on our 9.108 SW HA (active-passive) local installation, but, in last 5 days, we didn't get same CPU peaks during Avira updates. I'm going to update to 9.109 this evening and tomorrow I'll check again.
If possible (ASAP) I'll check also on our customer UTM installations.
    Have a nice day.

    Luigi
  • Hey Bob,

no such CPU spikes with 9.109-1 for me!

    greetings

    Max
  • Hi Bob,
checked the one utm running 9.109-1 and didn't find any spikes. It updates every 15 minutes.
I did find that swap is slowly growing 3.25% on 4gb after 4 days.

  • Update: I watched top when the Avira pattern was installed, and didn't see anything strange.  Then, cssd started going wild, so the problem is with cssd, not the Avira pattern update.

    Cheers - Bob
