High Availability - Hot Standby vs. Cluster

Folks,

I'm testing a new build with an ESXi Server running two UTM 9 Nodes. Currently I have it configured in Hot Standby mode and I'm curious if the behavior I'm seeing is accurate. If I were to perform an Up2Date, upon Slave Node completion, should I expect some downtime?

That being said, and if that is expected, does a Cluster scenario ensure 100% uptime?

    Hi DaMaN,

    I run the UTM in an HA config on my home ESXi server and the minimal downtime you saw (just a few pings)with the firewall is expected behavior. Part of the reason I run it that way at home. Keeps interuptions to a minimum when I'm running updates and the better half is streaming something on the TV. [:)]

    That's exactly the reason I've implemented this approach. Limited hesitation for when to update and a reduction in downtime upon execution. Not to mention the ability to momentarily test a UTM Beta in a Live Environment without having to physically reconfigure anything.

    I switched the Primary Master again and this time I didn't witness a Wireless AP disconnect. I lost connection briefly, as expected, and I had to reload the Web Admin. The downtime isn't much and it's a significant improvement over a single instance solution. I had it in my head that it was seamless and became concerned that I configured it incorrectly.

    That being said, for my own edification, does an Active Active High Availability solution provide a seamless transition?

    Yes, at double the cost compared to Active-Passive. [:D]

    I think this is where BAlfson or BarryG would interject that Active-Active in a UTM 320 is more then the cost of an Active-Passive 425 pair, and provides less grunt to boot.[:)]

    I'm with you on that. Companies have the resources to pay for the uptime if they so choose.

    At the risk of sounding foolish, however, since I use this in my home environment, double the cost of nothing should still be nothing [:D] 

    The definition 'overkill' doesn't necessarily apply to me. It's fun to tinker and I have the available hardware resources on the ESXi Server.
