WS500 for home use

I found a WS500 for $200 and wonder if it can be used to run Sophos UTM Home Edition?  I would like to use Sophos UTM Home Edition and I'm looking for a solution that will support 50 MBs/down and 20 MBs/up for my home use.  

I'm currently using a PandorasHope PRO, but would like more capability; specifically https filtering.

    What is a WS500?

    I only find weather station and voice recorder via Google and I don't think you mean either of that... [:)]

    The WS500 is a Sophos Web Appliance and not part of the UTM product line. However, I am pretty sure it's still x86 based so in theory you should be able to install UTM on it as long as all the hardware is compatible but since that info is not available it would be a shot in the dark.

    Thanks for the info.  Are there any relatively cheap hardware solutions ready made, or do you pretty much have to build something?

    Hi,

    Make sure that WS500 has enough NICs (at least 2) and enough RAM (or can be upgraded)(at least 2-4GB, depending on features needed), and a fast enough CPU.

    Also, it will probably be LOUD and possibly power-hungry.

    re ready-made: nothing that cheap, but lots of stuff available.
    LogicSupply will assemble and test their systems; they have some multi-NIC boards by JetWay and maybe ASRock.

    Fit-PC sells their systems on Amazon; they have a couple multi-NIC models and the prices aren't terrible.

    How many NICs do you need?

    Thanks for the reply. Just need two NICs. This is for home use and I plan to connect it to a wireless AP.

    Do you want the wireless AP in your LAN or in a DMZ / guest network?

    If the latter, you'll need a 3rd NIC (or a VLAN switch or VLAN capable AP).

    In my LAN, no need for a guest network.

    OK, so anything with 2 decent NICs would work.

    Even a PC with an add-in PCIe NIC, if you don't need something tiny.

    I have a WS1100 (REV 0A or 0L depending on the sticker, SYS-G-SOP220).  Under the hood mine is a SuperMicro chassis (custom labelled 512L-260?) and motherboard (X7SBI) with an Intel Q9440 CPU and 8G RAM.  

    I find the WS1100 to be loud but I bought it cheap (very cheap) for a home ESXi host.  I use a much quieter Intel D2500CC based system for my home UTM.
