Hardware Advice For n00b

Hi everyone,

I'm planning my first UTM install for home. I don't have anything suitable laying around so I need to buy some hardware. Here's what I'm planning on doing, does this look like a reasonable build? My home Internet connection is 50 Mbps/10 Mbps and I want to experiment with as many features as possible. This box will be in my home office and I'm pretty sensitive to fan noise so I'm trying to keep it quiet and efficient too.

    Hi & welcome to the forum!

    That looks like a very reasonable configuration.

    If you think your internet speed might be upgraded to 100mbps+, and/or if you have a lot of http traffic through the Web Protection A/V, then I'd recommend considering a faster i3 CPU.

    If you want something in a (vertically) smaller case (mini-ITX), I can make some recommendations, but the price will be significantly higher, and the footprint would probably be similar.

    Also you might consider using 8GB if you want to use as many features as possible.

    Thank you both for your comments. I will go ahead and spec more cpu and ram for the build.

    Barry -- I read your post detailing your mini itx build. That Fractal Design case looks awesome. My only concern with an itx build is the noise from the smaller fans. My last PC 10 years ago was a Shuttle breadbox that sounded like it had a jet in it. I'm sure small form factor PCs have come a long way since then but I'm still a little gun shy.

    Even so, I may downsize this build to a SG05 case and use the Gigabyte H87N motherboard. Something like this:

    Hi, 

    The Fractal Design case is very quiet, but not very small.

    The h87n board should be fine if you can get it for a good price. In my case, newegg had it and the z87n for about the same price and the z87n has Bluetooth, etc. (Useful if I ever repurpose the board).

    Reminder: the secondary Atheros NICs are still unsupported in the UTM.
