Upgrade my hardware?

Hello everyone,

I have Astaro 8 running, and have been for years on a Proliant ML310 with a pentium 4, 1.5GB ram.  As you know, that is a very old system.

I upgraded recently my internet from 12MB to 25MB down.  I have pretty much most services running like IPS, HTTP web content filtering, antivirus, etc.  Would it do me any good spending 150 bucks and getting a dual core, or single xeon processor server from like craiglist?  I'm on a budget, but figure upgrading to a slightly faster processor and a little more ram would help?  

I don't really see the 25MB down, and wondering if hardware is a bottleneck.

Maybe even putting it on a desktop PC with dual core?

    Before you conclude that the processor is the problem (I agree that it seems likely), try #7 in Rulz.

    Hi, you can get an Intel i3 or i5 cpu and a board with Intel NICs, or buy something like the HP microserver Gen8, for under $400USD.

    Be sure to get 4gb RAM.

    I finally had the time to try all those steps...but no such luck.  I'm only getting between 10-20MB on that interface, when it should be 25.  I'm gonna replace the hardware and go from there.

    I found a HP DL380 on craigslist thats in working order for 50 bucks.  Pretty crazy deal if you ask me.  Not sure of the Generation tho, looks a little older, G4 maybe. It's a rack server which kinda sux because I have no room. I'm using a tower now.  Plus I'm worried about power usage on that big a server.  Dunno

    4x Xeon 3.40GHZ processors
    6x 73GB SCSI Hard drives
    dvd drive
    4GB of RAM
    Dual NIC's

    that's total overkill and will have a negative affect on your power bill.  If that's not a concern then no problem..[:)]  I would try to find something more recent of a vintage.  Keep in mind those are p-4 based xeons and won't be individually any faster than what you have..so you would be hamstringing your ips performance.

    I can get a core 2 duo for free with 2G ram.  I'd have to buy some NICS, but would that be better than my P4 for what I need?

    what the ghz of the duo..if it is 2ghz or faster yes.

    Its a 3GHz,  and 4GB ram.  Built in NIC (not sure of the brand)  Its a dell optiplex 780 I think.  I would also buy two additional intel NIC's (PCI)

    Will it run the new UTM version 9?  I'm only on 8 still.   I also have a 25MB connection.

    Hi, most Dell Opti's have Broadcom or Intel gigE NICs.

    I think there were some problems reported with the UTM on some older Dell models, but I've run it on a few OK, including 620's and 745's.
