UTM internet speed issue

Hi,

I'm running UTM 9.105-9 in a home environment on a pc with an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz" processor in it.
It has 2 NIC's with both a 1000Mb/s Full Duplex connection, one to my cable modem and one to my GB switch.
It has 3.3 GB of memory and 48-56% is in use.
The harddisk is a 60GB SSD drive.

My cable connection is a 150 down and 15 up connection.

When I connect my Windows 8 pc to the cable modem I get near the 150/15 speeds, but with the UTM in between the speeds only get near to 100-114/15.

Does anyone have an idea how I can solve this?

    Hi Erwin,
    not sure what features you have enabled, but you could try turning of IPS and repeating the test.
    Also during the download test how busy is the CPU?

    Hi Ian,

    Thanks for your reply. In idle the CPU runs at 3-6%.
    I switched off IPS, and now (when using 2 pc's for downloading) I manage to go to 140MB. CPU runs mostly at 6% now, sometimes it goes for a small period off time to 16%. [[:)]]

    So I guess it's a combination of IPS on the UTM and a pc that doesn't handle the speed well... [[:)]]

    Hi, 

    Note that your system may be capable of higher performance if you have multiple network streams going; try running a speedtest from 2 computers at the same time.

    I'd recommend leaving the IPS on for security's sake... if you can't live with the speed loss, you can try the following, starting with least effort/expense:

    1. tune the IPS settings to match your network.
    Also make sure you do not have ANY or Internet in the "Protected Networks" setting.

    2. change the NICs to Intel or Broadcom

    3. change the CPU to a faster one. For single-stream performance, GHz is more important than more cores. 
    More core would help with multi-stream perf, and with A/V and other features.
