HP DUAL NIC will work?

Hi Guys,

I am about to have some family move back in (yay) and I will be setting up the Home UTM on a HP ML110 G6, as this only has one built in NIC I am thinking about buying another one, as dual gigabit PCI E

This way the UTM can use the builtin nic and one of the PCI nics and I can use the remainder NIC for a VoIP PBX

I will be virtualising this server, so any reccomendations for setup of the VM etc? I haven't done a VM setup only traditional setup

    Hi Liam,
    that card looks very much like the dual intel version I have installed on my VM.
    You should dedicate one card to the external interface. I did build a UTM in the VM as an experiment to see what was required. I used dedicated NICs for each function in bridge mode except where the UTM was connecting to the MS server in the VM.

    I am not a great fan of putting a UTM in a VM, doing that provides another layer of software to be attacked or exposed to the internet, when you really are trying to reduce the software that is exposed.

    Hi, the Intel 82571EB chips are supported since version 8.something.

    For virtualization, be sure to use a bare-metal hypervisor such as ESXi.

    OK, I will check out the INTEL one, hopefully it isnt $200, but I was going to experiment with the VM, because the VoIP PBX doesn't have to be on that server, I will probably just do a traditional install if I need to,

    But I was planning on using ESXi

    I should have added I am using ESXi 5.1 and the intel 1000 cards work with both VM and bare metal.
    Just bought a new single intel 1000 for a new board I am trying out.

    Hi, the HP nic uses the Intel chips.

    If you're using esxi, then the nics need to be supported by it, and the utm won't know the difference unless you're doing pci pass through.

    Use the vmxnet3 drivers in a vm.

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for the support! I was told my family will be moving a lot sooner than I had imaged, actually tomorrow! So I had to stop in at work and pickup a spare computer. I could only grab a HP SSF machine, I found a spare gigabit PCI NIC and took the metal PCI plate/template off and gently slotted it into the machine, this PCI NIC didn't have a low profile plate for it, so it has no support, but I have gently plugged in a ethernet cable.

    It has a dual core processor and 2gb of ram, I think it will do the job fine [:)])
