new NIC support? Intel i210 / i211 / i217 & Atheros AR8161B

Hi, I'm eyeing a GigaByte GA-Z87N-WIFI motherboard for a project for a friend, and am wondering if the NICs would work in the UTM...

Other sites list them as:
1. Intel i217V
2. Atheros AR8161 or AR8161B 
3. some intel wifi NIC

I know the wifi isn't supported, but am wondering about the other 2...

Atheros: Some sites say the Atheros needs some version of the atl1c or atl1e module; other sites say it needs the 'alx' module, which I don't see on 9.105 at least.

Intel: apparently current versions of the e1000e driver support this NIC, but it's not clear when the support was added, or if the UTM has a new enough module.


Also, does anyone know if these NICs perform well, and work for VLANs?

This is the only mini-ITX board I've seen with Haswell CPU support, and dual non-realtek NICs.
I know Jetway offers some Intel NIC add-on modules for some of their boards.

    Why not just switch over to VMWare ESXi and then you can forget all about the ASG HCL.  A lot of drivers can be added to ESXi after the fact.  I've been running it solid for a couple of years now on all kinds of hardware and you can configure the virtual ASG hardware exactly how you want it.  4-8GB of system ram is plenty, with 2-3GB dedicated to ASG.  I've had a board running dual i210 intel gigabit controllers for awhile now, and they pass through just fine as e1000 or e1000e controllers to ASG.

    BTW, I've moved away from the Atom boards.  Just built a ESXi based Xeon E3-1240 4C/8T 3.4GHz with 32GB 1.35v ECC-DDR3 and with 6 spinning drives it idles at 62 watts.  Compared to a 30w low power Atom system, the Haswell Xeon costs me a whopping $0.09 per day more to run 24/7.  :-). Well worth it IMHO!

    the issue is not the intel nic, but the Atheros one.

    I have built a UTM in a vm esxi 5.1 box running e3-1275 v2 with 16gb, so yes I am aware of the that capability.

    I don't agree with running a UTM in a VM environment for a real internet facing system, you are putting another layer of software on the outside of the protection system. Yes, I aware VM has its own secutity levels, but why risk it.
    I just built a system running a i3-3220t which idles at 20w.
