ASIX AX88179 USB 3 Ethernet driver missing

Hello together

I got a cheap Lenovo Ideacentre Q190 and thought to replace my older astaro (in a normal pc case) to have less power consumption and less noise in the living room.

Because the Lenovo does only have one network card i invested in a Digitus DN 3023 USB 3 Ethernet Adapter. (that have a AX88179 chipset)

Unfortunately i found out, that this adapter is not running. Maybe, because the ASIC driver that is built into the UTM since 9.1 is too old (rev. 22.Dev.2011 as i found out).

There are news drivers (here: http://www.asix.com.tw/FrootAttach/driver/AX88179_178A_LINUX_DRIVER_v1.3.0_SOURCE.tar.bz2).

Is it possible to build the driver on my own or is Astaro/Sophos willing/able to implement the newer driver into the system?

A little information would be very helpful. Even whom i should ask is helpful.

ps.: Yes, i saw the forum thread what drivers are implemented in version 9.1 (but unfortunately after buying the usb 3 device...).

    The Q190 was a bad choice (no expansion slots) --- even if the driver for your USB NIC was built into the UTM platform, the performance of USB NICs is poor ... they added that capability, I guess for people to play with, but I'd never use it in production.

    There are a lot of small form-factor PC platforms out there that would be better suited for this, to be sure.  The Q190 would probably work (the price IS attractive) except it only has the one NIC.

    And as far as adding your own driver -- this isn't supported and I don't recall a case of anyone ever getting that to work.  If you must use a USB NIC, use one of the supported ones.

    You may also be able to use the Q190 if you have a VLAN capable switch you could attach it too, just VLAN out the single port for Internet, LAN, etc.  but a "cheapo" switch from your local brick and mortar store won't work for this, you'll have to spend a bit more on a Managed switch.

    Hi Bruce,

    I haven't seen a way to configure VLANs if only one NIC is installed; Is a 2nd NIC no longer needed to set that up?

    You know, I'm not 100% sure about that, never had to actually do it, it's more of a theory.  I may try it just to see if it can be done.

    Couldn't he configure eth1 as Standard Ethernet on his existing box, configure eth0 with the VLANs and then backup/restore to the new box?

    Hi Bob, I think that should work, assuming eth1 is disabled before the backup.

    However, that wouldn't work for a new configuration or new user.

    If the required USB NIC driver isn't in the vanilla linux kernel, it's very unlikely we'll add support. Is there a linux driver for it at all?

    That's what I figured.  I've been test driving a few firewalls.  IPFire saw these nics just fine.

    Thanks for the quick feed back.  Now to figure out how to upgrade to 9.2...

    Is anybody know how to compil a kernel module like new Asix driver ?
    - directly on the ASG system
    or
    - for the ASG with vanilla kernel compilation

    I've tried to compil the new Asix driver with a vanilla kernel the .config file and Module.symvers from my running ASG, but no success.
    The kernel refuse to load my module with an error : 'disagrees about version of symbol module_layout'

    Help would be appreciated.

    You are very much wrong to say that all USB Nics only offer poor performance. Perhaps you have not noticed but technology changes quite rapidly. 

    Yes at one time USB nics did have pretty lousy performance but not the case anymore. Especially with regards to the one mentioned. 

    The AX88179 which I have as well is a newer usb gigabit Ethernet adapter that works in either USB 2 or 3 and even in USB 2 mode it is still is quite capable. In USB 2 mode my adaptor gets up to 85 mbps. My ISP only is limited to 80 but I would assume it could even do better if my isp was faster. 

    It's funny how so many are still making the claim that USB nics are lousy when we live in a world where new technology is practically introduced every day.
