UTM 9.104 Soft-Released

I agree, gilipeled, that your situation is different.  You've become a "gamma" test-site.  I've been pushing Astaro to do that for years, so I appreciate the effort this requires for you and your folks.   Thank you!

The reason I push for the roll-back capability is to draw more people into trying soft releases and to generate more information faster.  I won't advise that my existing customers upgrade to new versions until I know they won't be impacted - new customers are installed with the version shipped on the appliance.  Most of my V6 customers first moved to V7 at V7.303.  Likewise, existing V7 customers first moved to V8 at V8.302.  I'm optimistic about 8.310->9.104.

I acknowledge that a roll-back capability bringing in more high-usage soft-release testers may not yield an improvement in fixing bugs in the development cycle...

Years ago at IBM, I did some regression analyses on chip production yield-rates.  The accepted wisdom in the industry at the time was that yield-rates grew as a function of the number of chips produced.  In none of the IBM yield-rate data could I correlate yield-rates any better to total-number-of-chips-produced than simply to time.

The net of my report was that beyond a certain number of production lines for testing, additional production lines did not shorten the "learning curve."  One implication was that IBM was spending too much money producing too many chips during the development cycle.  After I left, I know that one plant reduced the number of development production lines from 12 to four.   I don't know what they concluded about that experiment, nor if my work had anything to do with the decision to try it.
