New setup but not sure about NIC card?

Hi All,

I am looking for some answers.

I am wanting to build a new computer/server as my firewall. It is going to be quite beefy, but what I am worried about is that the NIC I am looking at wont work?

I am thinking of getting a PCI-E NIC with 2 or 4 G-Bit ports on the one card. How will this show up on the UTM? As independent ports, as if they were seperate PCI cards?

How will that all work?

What brand and model of NIC are you planning to use?
What brand and model of motherboard, or computer, are you planning to use?

Hi, I have used a couple of the Intel quad NICs; they show up as independent NICs.

I wouldn't recommend anything other than Intel or Broadcom.

Please specify the exact model and/or chipsets of the NIC, and hopefully someone can say if it's supported by the UTM.

Another (often cheaper for home use) option is to use 2 VLAN capable NICs in the firewall and a VLAN switch.

Regular and BLK Versions, simply a difference in the packaging. Hope this helps!

FWIW, the differences between those two NICs seem to be in power consumption and virtualization features (the ET2 uses almost twice as much power, but supports "PCI-SIG SR-IOV"), and bus speeds (I think this is a mistake though; PCIe 2.0 should be 5GT/s).

BTW, I've had problems with quad NICs overheating in poorly ventilated computers. I'd definitely avoid the hotter ET2 unless you have good airflow across the PCIe cards.
