Sophos UTM 9.1 cheap small silent hardware for home environment

Here's what I put together for my home setup about 3 months ago from mini-box.com. Works well for me, so far, and total cost out the door was only $270.00 USD:

M350 enclosure with picoPSU-80 and 60W adapter
160GB SATA 2.5" HDD
2x 2GB DDR3 SODIMM
Intel D2500CCE Mini-ITX Motherboard

Completely fanless, so runs silent :-)

Also, I should note that I don't have a 100mbit Internet connection, so ymmv.

Hi, any current-generation Atom CPU is going to struggle with a 100mbps connection.

Look at an Intel Core CPU, either a very fast i3 or an i5; and make sure to get good NICs (Intel or Broadcom).
Note that many of the i5's have AES-NI instructions for VPN encryption acceleration, etc., and would be more 'future-proof'.

DaMan841 says, on page 2, that he can get 120mbits through his Atom, but he's using good (Intel) NICs, and is not doing any AntiVirus scanning. I'd still recommend at least an i3.

Is a neat, solidly built fanless box that has upgradable SODIMM memory, atom processor (1.8ghz quad core) and 4 giga NICS, that you can upgrade with an expansion card to 8 NICS.

The unit is great and solid, but the one thing i HATE about it... it runs HOT. [:@]

Like really hot... I put my UTM unit in a small space under the stairs, and it gets so hot i worry about things catching fire.

So i can only advise on this kit if you plan on putting it in a cold mineral oil bath! Or have plenty of constant ventilation.

***Edit: The only other gripe i have about this unit, is that it comes with a small WIFI adapter. However, as you all know, Aastaro/Sophos doesn;t play with other WIFI units... and the AP10-50 range is SO EXPENSIVE.

Jetway JBC373F38W-S should come with 4 Realtek RTL8111EVL PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet LAN which are not supported by current kernel.

Can you please SSH to your firewall and paste here the output of the lsmod command ?

I would like to build a home UTM with the actual hardware.

It should work with a 250/25mbit link (3 users, mostly surfing, downloading and gaming) AV should be enabled.
And a other requirement is the cheap price and silent hardware.

What do you recommend at this time?

The biggest *fail* in this config is the cpu, because it is not a silent.
