HP microserver

I have been offered a cheap N36L HP proliant microserver and wondered how well this would perform as a software appliance?

I have been using a dell dimension 3000 pc which appears to be struggling when using web protection, endpoint protection and application control.  Quite often I will see the cpu max out and it only has 2GB ram installed.

My question is how much better would the microserver be over the dell?  I am a little concerned that the cpu will still be too small as I would also like to enable IPS again which just kills the dell at the moment.

    Hi Andy,
    please provide the hardware details of each machine. Memory is more of an issue rather than cpu unless it is a very old PIII or something similar.

    The specs are as follows

    Microserver

    AMD N36L processor with 2 cores at 1.3ghz
    4GB Ram (officially supports up to 8GB but unofficially can take 16GB)
    sata HDD
    2 x GBe (1 intel and 1 Broadcom)

    Dell 

    Intel P4 processor - single core at 2.8ghz
    2GB Ram (this is the maximum)
    IDE HDD
    2 x GBe Realtek nics


    Broadband is a 30 Mbps cable connection

    Hi, as the HP has a dual-core CPU, that will probably help a little with a/v scanning, etc.

    I'm guessing (from MicroServer N36L/N40L/N54L - 6 Drive Edition) that single-threaded performance won't be significantly faster, so you probably won't notice an improvement UNLESS you have multiple simultaneous transfers/users.

    You say the IPS kills performance; what speeds are you seeing through the firewall?
    Have you tuned the IPS at all?

    I'd expect 50-100mbps from the IPS per CPU core, but keep in mind A/V scanning, etc. will take away from that.

    The Realtek NICs waste a lot of CPU too.

    How cheap is the server? You might be able to get something significantly better for around $300USD.

    I have been offered it for £60, but notice on ebay that I can get the latest N54L version (dual core 2.2ghz) for £150 but would rather not spend that much if I can help it.  

    Activating the IPS on the Dell machine make browsing really sluggish and the maximum download speed is about 18 Mbps.  Without the IPS enabled, the download speed can max out the broadband connection.  I have also got single scanning av enabled.

    The current setup works ok, but can get sluggish every now and then which looks to be when the cpu gets maxed out.  I'm not sure what is maxing it out as it has always returned to normal by the time I logon and run top.

    How much difference does the ram make to the performance?  One of the benefits of the N36L is it already has double the ram compared to the dell.

    Hi,
    More RAM will only help if you're already swapping a lot (check the swap usage on the Reporting->Hardware graphs, preferably with IPS and everything enabled for at least 30 mins).

    Can you arrange a 'trial' of the HP before committing?
    You can make a config backup from the current system, install from ISO, and restore the config via a USB stick; wouldn't take long.

    I'm surprised you're only getting 18mbps though; is that for http traffic or any traffic?
    Try disabling the http proxy and see what you get.
    What do you have in 'protected networks' in the IPS settings?

    I would also recommend avoiding UTM version 9.1 until they get the bugs out.
