UTM Appliance sizing

Hi All,

I am looking to size which 2 appliances I will need, and would like your input.

We have 2 offices, each with there own WAN links, and between the 2 offices a 10Mbps point to point link

Office 1:
2 WAN links, [up/down speed in Mbps] 100/4 and 35/5
60 active users at most at one time, browsing & occasional downloads.
average of 5 Guest users (always on WiFi) 
10-15 VPN users using RDC (planning on using the HTML5 portal)
Email server for 200 users (sees an average traffic of 1200 emails per day in total)
WSUS server
Web Server (hosting sensitive medical data, will use WAF).
planning on 9 Wireless Access Points (1x AP50, 5x AP30, 3x AP10)

Office 2:
1 WAN link, 30/4 
Email Server (same as above)
10 users, browsing & downloading.
Replica of 6 VM servers from office 1 (office 2 is also a DR site)
3 Wireless Access Points (1x AP50, 2xAP30, maybe 1xAP10 in the future to cover a dead spot)

Both UTMs will need full guard, I was thinking of the UTM 220 for Office 1 and UTM 110 or UTM 120 for Office 2.

At the moment we are running a Juniper SSG140 with Barracuda 220 at office 1 and a Juniper SSG5 at office 2

    Hi, yes, already have done and they provided the quotes. However they are new to this, and going by the data sheets, no else supplies Sophos here (Malta is a small island). Data sheets say one thing... reality is another. I was just looking for some input as the reality is I have the quotes etc... and we are just about to confirm the order today, but came across some people saying this, and others saying another...

    If I were to manually upgrade the RAM in UTM220 device... would that affect support (I dont mean hardware support), as in support of features and configuration: purely the software side.

    This is excactly the same information, that we have.

    Official Answer:  There are no, and won't be any, official RAM upgrade kits for ASG appliances made available.  There was a program like this in the past (a few years ago), but no longer.  Sophos' official stance is, if you need a newer appliance with faster RAM, to upgrade to a newer unit.  To help consumers along with that, they had a Hardware Refresh program where customers could upgrade their older appliances with discounted newer units; many of our (my company's) customers took advantage of that.  That program ended March 31st; I hope your reseller notified you about it, as that would have been your best option.

    Unofficial answer:  you could open the unit and add more RAM yourself (if it's a newer unit that supports adding more RAM); however, you can / will void the warranty and support on the device when you do so.  You can check out what kind of RAM is in there, and buy something similar to upgrade.

    For reference, the new Rev. 5 UTM220 units ship with 2GB nowadays.

    HOW LONG WILL THE PROGRAM RUN?

    • The Hardware Refresh program will run until 30 June 2013.


    • All Astaro appliances are eligible for the program except: ASG 110/120 Rev.0, Rev.1, Rev.2; ASG 220 Rev.1, Rev.2; ASG 320 Rev.1; ASG 420; ASG 525/525F Rev. 1

    Thanks, at the moment we are not looking at a hardware refresh, we are in the very final stages of procuring our first UTM appliances.

    Can the 110 / 120 devices have there RAM upgraded (unofficial etc...)
