UTM cluster with HW appliance and VM appliance

Hello forum members,

I have seen a few questions with creating a HA cluster with different types of UTM appliances already but just wanted to make sure if the following is not possible.

We have a Sophos UTM 320 hardware appliance and eventually want to create a HA cluster. The question is, can we use a VM appliance (running under ESX) as passive node or should both nodes really be the same hardware and software (which would mean we would need two UTM320 HW appliances with same software and proper licenses)?

Again I appologise if this question might have been asked in this forum already somewhere.

Hi, for Active-Passive (failover / hot standby), you only need one license. For Active-Active (clustering / load balancing) you need 2 licenses.

For Active-Passive, all that should matter is that there are the same # of NICs, both are 32-bit or both are 64-bit, and that both systems are fast enough to handle the load.
