I have considered putting Sophos as a virtual machine running on a Citrix Xen Server or VM's ESXi (or another but i'm not familiar with other offerings...I require free or super low cost) so that I could combine Web Hosting, NAS, (maybe DNS, prob not), some virtual desktops of perhaps XP and maybe Ubuntu or Win7 or CentOS or something (I prefer Debian but like CentOS), a Plex media server, and perhaps a mail server (would be in a LAMP stack with the web hosting I think)
If You care about what I am putting this on continue reading, otherwise skip this massive paragraph.
Obviously to house all of this on one machine would require a "beast" compared to what Sophos normally requires, I plan on putting it on an old Dell server that sports dual Xeon processors which support IntelVT are both dual core with hyper threading at 2.8 GHz with no overclocking and comes stock with 12GB of DDR2 ECC RAM although I might up that to somewhere between 24-48GB worth of RAM. I also plan to have 4 HDD, perhaps SAS but more likely just SATA hot swappable in a RAID 0+1 config (pretty sure you can do that with 4 drives, but its been awhile) prob 100GB per drive although with a deployment like this I might go with twice that size if I can afford it or find a good deal. Also, if it does not already have a riser I might get one and put a video card in it...I am curious to see how well playing video games such as World of Tanks or League of Legends runs in a virtual environment when the rest of the stuff is not really needing to share the video card... if it works well i might even try and run Diablo3, Crysis, Battlefield3, or something on it at a low setting...but I digress.
Anyways My main concern with this is that I will have problems on the networking front. I don't believe I will be able to give the external IP to Sophos...that will almost surely have to go to the host of the VM's... this will not really matter to me but will it matter to Sophos?
Also Will I have any problems bringing off my internal network off of a virtual instance of a proxy server transparently? not fully transparent just standard transparent so the user does not have to put a proxy in their web browser...although i'm not opposed to bridged mode..I was just told its not the best way to roll.
So really if anyone has any experience with this I guess I am calling out to you.
