ESXi 5.1, Dell R720 and Intel I350 Network Cards

Hi,

We are encountering some serious performance issues running running UTM 9.0 on a Dell R720 with ESXi 5.1. The network cards in the machine are all Intel I350 Quad-port 1GB adapters.

The throughput from the adapters is approximately only 200 Mbit instead of 1 Gb.

Is anyone else using a similar configuration and encountering performance issues?

If so have you been able to solve it and how?

Hi, use the VMXNET or E1000 drivers in VMWare; do NOT use Flexible.

Hi Barry,

We are using E1000 for the vmnics and used the software ISO for the install.

More investigation appears to indicate it may be a problem with the VMware drivers for the network cards, but we will try the other NIC type you said and see if that can improve the situation a bit.

Da_merlin recommended the VMXNET drivers if you're interested in using jumbo frames.

I've personally gotten great results with VMXNET3 NICs.

Hi,

maybe this vmware kb is related to your problem:

VMware KB: Low virtual network I/O performance with Intel 1Gbps NIC using igb driver

Depending on your testing workload you possibly ran into the default limits of the igb driver. Try setting it to dynamic and test again.

Also i would recommend installing the latest igb driver which should be:
