Astaro with Linksys WAP Router

Hi All,

I am trying to use my newly built Astaro 9.004 box with my Linksys E1550 wireless router.  I have my Astaro box set with Eth0 as my webadmin port and Eth1 as my internet port.

Here is my current Setup, that is not working:

Cable Modem > into Astaro Eth1 port > Out Astaro Eth0 port > into Linksys router "Internet" Port. 

When I do this I am unable to see my Astaro box(no internet either), to configure it. If I connect the box and my laptop into the "Ethernet" section of ports I am able to see the Astaro box but then lose the ability to see the internet. 

I am not sure what I am doing wrong here, do I need to use a switch instead of a router at the first point and then connect my router into the switch as a WAP? My expertise is not in networking and I would greatly appreciate any advice. I can provide any additional configs or information.

Edit to add, in a nutshell my primary question at this point is with the above connections, why can I not see the Astaro box and my laptop on the same network with the router?

    Hi, 

    Configure the Linksys in Bridge or AP mode, or tape over the Internet Port on the Linksys and plug the firewall into the LAN port on the Linksys.
    You'll also need to disable the DHCP server on the Linksys as soon as you configure DHCP on the firewall.

    You won't be able to get to the internet until you run the setup wizard on the firewall, and/or setup Masquerading and firewall rules.

    Hi Barry, thank you for the reply.

    I just looked and the E1550 is not capable of being put into a Bridge or Access Point mode, it looks like that functionality was removed by Cisco. If I use a switch and have a  that should work with no issue, but if I want to also have a WAP, do I need to buy a different wireless router that has an AP or Bridge mode? 

    Although if I buy a Wireless router that can do bridge or AP mode does that mean I can bypass needing a wired switch(Wireless router would also serve as wired switch)? So:

    Cable Modem > into Astaro Eth1 port > Out Astaro Eth0 port > into wired switch > into Linksys router "Internet" Port set to be an WAP



    Also, can anybody provide me with their network model switch and wireless router model numbers, who may have a setup like I am seeking?

    Use the other part of Barry's suggestion - tape over the WAN port on the Cisco and connect one of its LAN ports to the UTM - now you have a wireless switch. [;)]  Don't forget to follow the rest of his prescription, too.

    For some reason this nudged me in the right direction to fully understand what Barry said. Been a long weekend but I will give that a shot tomorrow night and hope to be up on an Astaro box!

    So that setup then makes my router a bridge\WAP? Since there is no setting in my Linksys E1550 router for that?

    Yep, a wireless router is just an ethernet router (with a DHCP server) + a wifi AP in one box.

    BTW, make sure the router's internal management address is different than the firewall's LAN address (e.g. don't use 192.168.1.1 on both).

    By using LInksys AP, will you be getting the same information, such as those we see from Sophos AP?  What bandwidth, what frequency?  Will we be able to setup guest and internal wifi?  

    Will we be able to see access points (linksys) in the access points page?
