RAM Upgrade

Hi,

I have an Astaro 220 with a 3-year Premium Support that I purchased last year.  I recently upgraded my Version 8 to the new UTM 9 and although everything seems to be working okay, I am seeing that my 1GB of RAM is getting near capacity on a regular basis.

Does anyone know of anything I can do to upgrade the RAM myself?  Our church spent over $5,000 for the unit and some AP 30's with 3-year support and we cannot spend more money on a new hardware unit only 1 year after we purchased it.

What can I do to get the RAM upgraded cheaply?

    Official Answer:  There are no, and won't be any, official RAM upgrade kits for ASG appliances made available.  There was a program like this in the past (a few years ago), but no longer.  Sophos' official stance is, if you need a newer appliance with faster RAM, to upgrade to a newer unit.  To help consumers along with that, they had a Hardware Refresh program where customers could upgrade their older appliances with discounted newer units; many of our (my company's) customers took advantage of that.  That program ended March 31st; I hope your reseller notified you about it, as that would have been your best option.

    Unofficial answer:  you could open the unit and add more RAM yourself (if it's a newer unit that supports adding more RAM); however, you can / will void the warranty and support on the device when you do so.  You can check out what kind of RAM is in there, and buy something similar to upgrade.

    For reference, the new Rev. 5 UTM220 units ship with 2GB nowadays.

    Nope, my vendor (Virtual Graffiti) never mentioned that to me.  FYI...I would NEVER use them as a vendor; they are horrible.

    I have a newer (Rev. 4 I think) appliance.  If I were to go with the second option and do it myself, what RAM modules should I use that would be compatible?  I currently have 1GB installed but would like to see 2GB.

    Some vendors are more involved with their customers than others, that's to be sure.  They definitely should have notified you about the availability of an upgrade program.

    I can say the only difference between a Rev. 4 220 and a Rev. 5 220 is the amount of RAM installed and the paint job.  As far as what kind of modules to use, your best bet, if you plan on doing this (and as a reminder, opening the case without Sophos Support's blessing can void your warranty), is to take a look at the chip that's in there and look up an equivalent.  I'm fairly sure it's DDR3 un-buffered, but I can't swear to it.

    BTW, if you are not having performance issues, I would not even mess with it.
