Sophos Home Edition with AP

Hello,

I was used to have an Astaro machine at home many years ago but stopped using it after the machine died and replaced it with a ZyWall box. This thing needs now to be replaced and I would like to ask you some questions before buying some hardware (eg a box for Sophos UTM).

I plan to install "Sophos UTM Home Edition" at home but I need to add WIFI for the mobile devices (iPad, iPhone, Playbook, Android... well all those things which do accept a RJ45!). I understood I need to add an AP to the configuration and I have 2 options: (1) Add a Sophos AP or (2) Add another AP plugged on the LAN. I do not really like the solution 2 because the WIFI is used only for the internet and I am not sure it is that safe.

Even if a Sophos AP10/30 are quite expensive, I am willing to acquire one as the management will be easier for me (I think I became lazy [:D]).

1. Does the "Sophos UTM Home Edition" really allow the management of one Sophos AP as described page 367 of the utm9065_manual_eng.pdf?
It is written: Note – With BasicGuard subscription, only one access point can connect to UTM.

2. Is BasicGuard included with the "Sophos UTM Home Edition" ?

3. Would you recommend the AP10 or the AP30? It is just for a personal usage at home.

Last but not least, I apologize if I ask very obvious questions but I am not a security guy [:$]

    Hi,
    I have an AP30 in my 2500sqft home (home user license). 
    It works fine; good coverage throughout the house, some coverage in the garage and yard.

    The AP30 has a ceiling mount and Power over Ethernet (POE) capability, and more antennas, vs the AP10.

    Traditionally, Astaro doesn't like us quoting prices on their hardware & software, but it's available from CDW: Sophos AP30 - wireless access point - AAP00300APUS - Wireless Access Points - CDW.com
    It appears to come with the PoE injector aka power supply.

    If you don't want to spend that much, consider the AP10 (Sophos AP10 - wireless access point - AAP00100APUS - Wireless Access Points - CDW.com) if you have a smaller home.

    Another option would be to just use any AP, tape over the WAN port, disable the DHCP server, and plug a LAN port into the firewall (on the firewall LAN or a new LAN port).
    Plugging into a new port on the firewall would let you isolate the WiFi users from your LAN.
    VLANs are another option, especially if the AP supports them (e.g. with DDWRT, see https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/51/t/21666).

    BTW, someone pointed out that Trendnet sells an AP which appears to be very similar to (probably the same OEM as) the AP30, for under $100: https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/52/t/28814

    Using a non-Astaro/Sophos AP works fine, but you won't be able to manage it from the firewall (you can still control DHCP, etc. though).

    Thank you both for your answers.

    I guess now I have to buy the hardware and hopefully everything will be frunning fine on a Shuttle DS61 or XH61V. I keep in mind I need an AP anyway [:)]

    Practically any wireless router can be operated in AP mode. In AP mode, my netgear router has a reduced user interface because many functions are not required for APs. It works very well in this mode.

    To clarify, basicguard is NOT the home user version. Basicguard is a special, low priced bundle option for the UTM100/110. Home user versions can connect more than one AP, feel free to purchase away! [:)]

    Thanks a lot for this info! I just found a guy selling 4 new AP30 for 99 euros each. I need to wait until the end of the month anyway.

    It was on ebay and a guy was selling 3 items but it was a long long time ago.
