Compatible Wireless AP Harware?

Only the Astaro/Sophos APs have firmware that will talk to the UTM for integrated management.

The AP10 is much less expensive, fwiw.

Astaro/Sophos does source the APs from an OEM (I don't remember who it is), but the firmware is customized.

You're not really missing anything obvious, but you can still setup VLANs on the UTM if the AP supports them, and manage the DHCP, DNS, etc. on the firewall.

Rogue, compare the cost of the Sophos-Astaro solution to other enterprise-class solutions, and I think you'll see that it's relatively inexpensive.  If you don't need a centrally-managed group of access points, then one of those other devices can provide the same level of security by attaching it to a different NIC or VLAN as Barry suggested.

I see what you are saying comparing to other Enterprise class solutions, but I don't see this as comparable to Cisco.  Don't get me wrong, I love the Astaro/Sophos UTM product set, but there is a big difference between OEM'ing stuff and building/engineering your own hardware.  The $80 (or less) I might pay for the exact OEM hardware as the AP30 makes the cost a bit insulting when comparing to the vast array of other options out there.  

I realize that I am also the cause of some of my own strife.  So I do try to keep that in perspective.  :-)  I work in InfoSec and frequently want better than consumer level products when I put stuff in my house.  I'm looking at this for a whole house AP for an ~3200 sqft , 2 story house.  I already have a PoE switch and the ability to mount it in a vaulted 2nd floor area that is fairly centrally located for the home.

All that said, I can keep doing what I do now (which is setting up the 3rd party AP with WPA2 and having it plugged into a different interface on the UTM).  But with moving into a new house and everything I thought I might move towards tighter integration.

FWIW, I put my AP30 on the upstairs hall ceiling in my 2500sqft house, and am getting good coverage throughout the house, and a weak but usable signal in the garage and driveway.

My former AP was a 54mbps ASUS, which was good but didn't have a very good signal in the corners of the house. It only had a single antenna.

I didn't know there were similar ceiling-mount APs for $90, but I did decide to spend the extra for the AP30 instead of a consumer AP as I wanted to have multiple SSIDs bridged to my VLANs, etc. 
I don't know how many consumer APs could do that, but someone did post saying it's possible with DDWRT on some hardware:

3400 sq. ft. 2-story brick built in 1937 - an AP 10 works just fine although the connection slows when in the opposite corner on the other floor, and there's not enough signal strength in the basement.  With Spring coming, I'm looking forward to surfing again from the front porch. [:)]

I  only did this to experiment with a RED 10 and an AP, but, as luck would have it, the Linksys died, so I left things in place since it was working so well and I'm lazy. [;)]
