ASG 110/120 rev. 2 RAM compatibility

Hi guys,

first things first, since this is my first post here: GREAT community and support here, I have literally been reading for hours. And until now I found an answer to every question I had.

I acquired a used Astaro ASG 110/120 rev. 2 and use it with a private license. So yes, I know a RAM upgrade will void the warranty, if there was any left.

The box came with 512MB installed and I tried to upgrade it to 1GB. Unfortunately, neither an Elixir 1GB nor a Kingston 1GB stick worked. It was just a constant *beeeep* when I tried to boot the ASG. So I went back to the 512MB which boots fine.

Is there any advice on which RAM sticks work?

Hi, Florian, and welcome to the User BB!

It's possible to do this. You should be able to get the specs off the existing 512MB part; probably PC133 that long ago.

I did actually check the specs before upgrading, since I did not want to waste money. The RAM that was installed is actually PC533 DDR2. The Kingston and Elixir both exceeded the specs, both 1.8V too. I already returned the Elixir, but the Kingston is still here so I took pictures of it and the original one. You will find them attached.

Still looking for someone who can point me at a specific module which worked on an ASG 120 rev. 2 appliance.

The Kingston is 667. I think the original RAM for the 120 rev.2 was 133, but I don't know. Apparently, the Kingston can't function at the clockspeed (133?) in use, but the 533 RAM can.

The RAM in the first picture is actually the factory RAM. BIOS says it is clocked at 533MHz. The data sheet for the Kingston says that it should be backwards compatible with 533.

I have an older 120 and 512MB is the max RAM it will take limited by the mobo.

Which revision are you referring to?

I find it hard to believe that the maximum RAM is limited to 512MB by the mainboard, since there is a trustworthy company which offers 1GB upgrades from revision 1!

I thought I had a rev2 but it might be an older revision. Did some searching on here looks like if you have 800MHz cpu you should be able to upgrade to 1GB according to the info in this thread https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/51/t/21327

If the BIOS Bootscreen is correct, running at 1,5GHz.

The memory has not arrived yet, they sent me the wrong one (for an Astaro 120, which is physically different). Now I'm waiting to receive the correct module and will report back at once.
