old laptop into firewall

Hi,

I have old laptop that I like to use as firewall (home license - v9).

It only has one ethernet port.  If I get USB to Ethernet adapter, is that going to work?


Also, I was just playing with it and I tried installing v8 and it says it found one ethernet port.  But when Installed v9, it says it cannot find any network port.  Any reason for that?


What do you recommend I should buy to add extra ethernet ports?

    Hi, the 9.1 Beta has support for some USB NICs. Try posting in the beta forum if you want to know about a specific NIC.

    Note that USB NICs are likely to suffer from poor performance, as USB does not have DMA and other important features for high throughput.

    What NIC is built-in?
    lspci -vvv |grep -i ethernet
    should give some helpful information.

    Sorry for taking long time to reply.  Here is the result:

    I was able to install UTM 9 with one network card.  When I tried to install UTM 9 few times, it said it cannot find network card and I had to exit installation.  After trying few times, finally it said one network card found and I continued with installation.  I installed it and got above info by running command you provided.

    I connected my laptop to network, but I still cannot access webadmin.  I can't ping to that device.  I can't ping other devices from UTM 9.

    Laptop is plugged into network and I see solid green led.  Orange led is blinking about 9 times and then it remains off for about 15 seconds.  this process is repeated for orange led.

    This is the only laptop I can use as firewall.  network card is built-in to motherboard so i cannot replace motherboard.

    I'm assuming network card is bad.  If that's the case, what do I do?  I need two network card on this laptop to make UTM 9 work.  Any suggestions on what I can buy to add two network cards?

    IBM ThinkPad Z61t is laptop model.  It has 2GB RAM and I think 80GB HD.

    Hi,

    1. try a linux 'live' distribution (such as RIP Linux) to see if you can get the NIC working. If not, then yes, the NIC may be bad.

    2. if the NIC is not bad, you could try the Astaro 9.1 beta and see if the NIC works with that.
    If it does, then you could try a USB NIC as your second NIC; the Beta has added (experimental?) support to Astaro for some USB NICs.

    Or, you could get an old PC (Pentium4 or better) and put some PCI NICs in it.

    It looks like NIC is bad.  I tried everything that I can think of.

    Is there list of supported USB NICs?  

    There is docking station available for my laptop (not usb one).  It's Lenovo z61t Thinkpad.  That docking station has ethernet port so that count as 2nd port?  Do you think it will work?
