Install on Dell server?

Hi all.  Just to get a feel for the software appliance side of things, I dug out one of our retired Dell PowerEdge 2950s and installed the latest 9.x ISO image on it.  It has 16GB of RAM, 4 Gigabit ports, and dual Clovertown Xeons of an older vintage.  After choosing a 64-bit install, I was pleasantly surprised that it found all of the hardware, including the onboard RAID controller.

That led me out of curiosity to price a pair of new Dell R420 1U servers just to see what it would cost if I wanted to replace our ASG-425s, and I was again pleasantly surprised that both of them with 3 years of HW coverage came to about $7400.

If I got them with dual Sandy Bridge Xeons, 16GB RAM, and dual 600GB 10K drives, where should that fall in performance, relative to the UTM 425, 525, and 625?

    There's one other factor to consider; the Sophos UTM Appliances include unlimited IP licensing out of the box -- if you go with your own hardware, you will need to price out the software license(s) that cover your number of protected IPs; in many environments, the Sophos UTM appliance can be a better deal if there are a lot of nodes to protect... sometimes the software licensing can be a better deal in lower node count / higher performance combinations.

    The config you noted is roughly what a 625 latest revision would have (averaging out all the components) -- with the exception of NICs, the 625 ships with a lot more (IIRC, 18 ports total).

    Probably as fast or faster.

    Make sure the CPU you choose has the AES-NI Instruction set, if you're using high-bandwidth VPNs.

    If you're doing a LOT of http caching, faster HDs or SSDs should perform better.

    Note that you can't directly migrate an appliance license to a software install.

    That is indeed the big unknown to me.  I have this question out to my reseller, so I'll have to wait until he gets back with some hard numbers.
