Cheap soultions for a sophos utm gateway?

Timely question. A quick search and I wasn't able to find if there is a buy/sell for used Astaro/Sophos ASGs/UTMs on this forum. Is there? Or is the preferred method eBay?

you can just build your own atom based machine.  it's not hard and inexpensive...there's several expamples of good builds on these forums.

I wouldn't recommend any Atom for much over 50mbps, based on my experiences.

Also, many Atoms have max RAM limitations, and Astaro needs a lot of RAM if you're using all the features (especially in v9).

An Intel i3 would be quite a bit more powerful, at somewhat higher electricity consumption.

atoms won't get to 50 megabits with ips and-or http proxy enabled...if you have both yeah..however once you specify the number of users we can give better recommendations.

Sadly where I live all you can get is 10MBps Down 768kpbs up DSL form century link. I plan on using endpoint protection. DNS/DHCP very rare on Remote access. Web caching and filtering. I have it installed on a dell dimension 4500s Pentium 4 processor 2GB of ram. Have never went over the 2GB ram. 80GB Hdd.  But looking at trying to find something like  a atom or another class of processor that could support it and does not require a large amount of power. Users is about possible maybe 3 people. 1 desktop 2 laptops are hardly used. 3 Android phones and a Netflix box. 

I do play a lot of video games and steam as well. But I don't believe that would be a problem with the unit even on a low power device.  

 

Possible a home storage server or nas at a later date in time. And XBOX once those come down in price.

For the usage you're referring to an Atom or i3 would fit the bill, depending on what features you want turned on. I've easily run v8 on an Atom D525MW w/ 4GB RAM. Haven't tested v9 on my Atom but is on my list.

If you're more technically oriented, there are systems you build around the i3/5/7 processors that would allow you to have your Astaro and run other stuff alongside in the same box. Some of the folks on here (myself included) run ESXi or HyperV, both of which are software that allows your PC to run more then one operating system side by side. There are caveats but you can run Astaro alongside FreeNAS/Openfiler/WHS (Home Storage/NAS systems) plus whatever else you want.

Next question what about the access points for the device or does anyone use one or are they as good as a cheap access point for home use?

There are currently 3 types of access points.
1/. AP10 good for home use, max throughput of around 75mb/s. Theoretically 10 users max
2/. AP30 good for home use around 150mb/s throughput, bit expensive. Theoretically 30 user max
3/. AP50 currently around 150mb/s throughput, waiting for a bug fix, very pricey for home use. Dual band 2.4 and 5ghz

I have all 3, some I bought and others I won as prizes.

Benefits.
1/. remote management
2/. no need to remember userid/password to configure the AP
3/. integrated into the UTM
4/. detailed remote management control and reporting
5/. easy to setup.
6/. if you have a couple of APs around the home, seamless movement between APs. Works very well.
7/. you can have different SSIDs on each AP.

Thank you so much been looking at a asus type board with intel celeron D processor. They are extremely quiet. 2GB ram so would do good for just a gateway router. Thank you for all your help.
