getting an ip from my isp

I have the exact same problem with the “External” interface. I installed UTM 9 last night and could not get an IP from my ISP.

After the first UTM 9 installation I loaded a v8.3 backup and had issues with the “External” interface. I reinstalled UTM 9 a second time and used the basic configuration wizard but still could not obtain an IP from the ISP for the “External” interface. In both installations the “External” interface “Link” status was up but the “State” was down. After each installation I unplugged the modem power and waited 5 minutes before restarting it.

I reverted back to version 8.3 and all was OK and the “External” interface got an IP. I also have a cable modem and the “External” interface on the UTM is set to receive an IP from DHCP.

In short, no problems with v8.3 but UTM 9 seem to have issues getting an IP at least when using a cable modem connection.

How is your external interface type setup in UTM?  Did you select Cable Modem, Ethernet Standard, etc?  This is something that you may have to change in order for it to work.

I have been trying for a few days now. When i set up one of my nic cards as an external device that will connect to my cable modem i cannot receive an ip from my isp. I have time warner cable if that matters. I do believe that as a home user we have five ip that can be issued to us so not thinking that this is the problem.

for cable isp's anytime you make a major change to the external nic whether mac or anything else it can cause issues.  unplug power from the cable modem..wait a minute..plug it back in and give a few minutes..thins should calm down then.

I'm not sure about "clehman" (the original poster) but my external interface was set like this:

Type: Cable Modem (DHCP)
IPv4 Default GW: Yes (checked)
Hostname:  blank
MTU: 1500
Proxy ARP: No (un-checked)
Asymmetric:  No (un-checked)
Displayed max: blank

After each installations of UTM 9 i unplugged the power from the modem and waited a few minutes. When i plugged it back i waited until all the lights on the modem were green. Then check if the external adapter received an IP from the ISP. Also tried clicking the "Renew" button to try and get an IP.

Anyone can think of something i may have missed?

Yes i am using the same set up. When i have done the same by unpluging the cable modem for a minute. Making sure the the sophos should be the first to pull an ip. Still no luck.

what nics are you using?

Using the onboard witch is nvidia. Then i have an linksys and a netgear card. Have tried every configeration of the three that i can think of.

None of those NICs are ones I would use grab some cheap Intel NICs and try again

Some ISPs also require you to call in to tell them the MAC has changed, and they can remove the listing for you so you can reset your modem and get your address.  

I have used both of those cards in my setup, and they have worked just fine.

yes but they do flake both under windows and linux..intels just work.
