It will use all 4 cores. More importantly how much memory are you providing for it? With multi-core systems you will to tune the number of IPS processes and provide at least 4gb of ram.

Thanks. I will get 8 GB ram to go with my new build. I have a question, is there any benefit going with i7 quad core instead of i5 quad core?

Great question!  Some of the I7s have AES-NI and that is used by Astaro with IPsec and SSL VPNs. I suspect that your IPv6 usage would benefit greatly.

Hi, an i3 should be able to handle a 100mbps internet connection and a few dozen users, but it depends on features used, etc.

To determine if you need anything faster, please answer:

1. What speed is your internet connection?

2. do you have multiple LANs and/or a DMZ?

3. how many users?

4. what features will you be using?

whatever you do install the 64 bit version of the utm..[:)]

I figured you would use ESXi on the I7 unit and give the UTM instance an appropriate amount of RAM and processors.

1. I have 3 different internet connections - Primary 100/10MB cable, Backup 12/3 MB DSL, and LTE cellular service. 

2. there are two different subnets in my LAN and one DMZ.

3. 7 users with multi devices (PCs, Macs, tablets, gaming consoles, streaming box, servers) that takes up about 35 ip addresses!

4. I will be using full IPS, firewall, VPN, and web filter.

P.S. it will be stand alone astaro box, no VM.

core i3 would handle things without an issue...[:)]  i-5 and i7 are severe overkill.  ram is your biggest issue...

Hey, I have one more question: is it possible to set up 2 hard drives to run on Astaro box? first SSD hard drive as a default boot and live logs/memory swaps if needed and 2nd slow hard drive is used for backing up logs and configuration? If so, how do I accomplish this?
