ASG220 rev 5 upgrade ?

Hi,
   Just set up asg220 rev5, with 2GB ram and Celeron CPU, latest version 9.004-33.  Using dhcp, web filtering, web antivirus, intrusion prevention, smtp proxy, application control, antivirus and antispyware. This box was using 43% ram even without any attached pc, now it has 50 pc and ram usage do not go below 70%, tomorrow will be 200+ users, will it hold or will it die? Is there ram upgrade option   for brand new asg220 rev5 boxes ? [:D] Or there will be some magic software update ? 
   Btw, is there raid1 option for asg220 rev5? 
  Is there ssd option for asg220 rev5? Or maybe there is hybrid drive option ?

    That's pretty high.
    You may experience performance degradation because of excessive swapping.

      Yes, i already feel performance degradation. And i will open support case, i think sophos should compensate in this case, i dont know how, but they will.
      And actually, i dont have ~200 users, i have ~ 200 ip's, actual computers around 80, network printers, lan only dvr systems and few lan only pcs are out of count, right ? Then why i can't use my full guard license with brand new device from sophos? And even more, on sophos webpage i can see asg220 is for 75-300 users and if you download product datasheet you see 81-300 users. Inconsistency at beginning of this product. And of course i am not even close to official troughtput specs.
     And this was clean v9 install from cd...
     This is case about what you read and hear about it before you buy and what you get after you buy. Can't understand why they put only 2gb ram inside this device, ram is 20usd worth...

    With all those features enabled, you look like you're a UTM320 candidate -- whoever helped you decide what size appliance to get didn't research your application thoroughly enough.  It's like asking a Miata to tow an Airplane.

      Ha ha, nice, short and expensive answer. I hope i will not get such answer from support, because then they need to change datasheet of this product, for example, UTM220 recomended users: 25-300, fullguard supported only on 25 users.

    The problem is, there's no set formula for deciding on what is a best fit; experienced VARs (like my company--I am not a Sophos employee--not tooting our own horn here, there are many others) would get additional information from the customer, such as bandwidth (current and future plans), type of usage, features that will be used, how many emails (on average) are processed, etc... and then come up with an expert recommendation as to what system is a best fit.  In many cases, we find a Sophos UTM that is a perfect fit; in come cases (such as low protected IP count, but a requirement to handle large amounts of bandwidth with heavy IPS / SMTP proxy usage, as an example) a software license and a VM or custom hardware deployment makes more sense.

    The problem is, the "big box pushers" (online sales sites, etc.) don't go through this sort of trouble, and a customer will generally pick the lowest cost item without knowing how all these variables fit together...  I hope you and Sophos can find a resolution, I have had to help customers (from other VARs, or ones that purchased online from a box pusher) myself that were in your shoes before -- in most cases it involved an upgrade to a larger appliance or moving to a software license and custom hardware.

    This is not a problem unique to Sophos; I've seen it happen with all sorts of equipment / software vendors.

    For what it's worth, I have customers running 60 users on a 220 with all features enabled, and I have sites running a 320 with 40 users, all features enabled -- there's more to figuring out the best fit than raw user / ip count.

    seen this thread with all the ASG "gurus" and this thread makes me nervous.
    i´m using ASG for several years, till now using 2x220 with 1 Gig Memory in Cluster mode with having all services enabled, but Intrusion Prev, pop3 proxy, site2site and wireless
    Have about 300 Users with mail an web.
    The system works quite good with V7, even RAM-Usage and Swap are increasing slowly. Now the RAM ist on 60-70%, Swap at 20% (uptime 180d)

    Upgrade to V8 haven´t be done now, since i´ve read/heard much about performance issues then.
    Since the EOL of V7 i MUST upgrade or switch to UTM9 boxes. My dealer mentioned to trade-in the boxes 1:1, so i would get 2x220 UTM9 for a nice price.

    But reading this thread and others, it looks like that this won´t be a good deal, cause the performance won´t be good enough for our kind of use.

    So, should i better switch to 320? This means having a 2x320 Cluster.

    what's the reason for you clustering?  is it load balancing or failover?  Depending on your usage 2x asg might not be needed...

    It´s load balancing. And for testing. This often was very helpful for new relases.
    Splitting up the cluster and upgrade of one box only, preventing the other from update.
    Sometimes this saves my live *g*

    I would recommend  using your own hardware + software license, in case if your asg license will end soon. With your own hardware you will be more elastic and with price of utm220 or utm320 you can get branded entry servers from Dell, HP or Supermicro with additional next business day warranty. Ram and Hdd's are cheap these days. Count your networks, ip's and you will know price of software license. But it should be cheaper than utm license.
