You can install v9 on your servers and import the backup made with v8.306.

Maybe you have to deal with your nics a little bit afterwards.

Generally speaking, a backup from an older install can be restored on a newer edition with no problems. Only gotcha to be aware of with your swap, hardware licenses will not work on a software install.

how can we swap the licences? simply put the code into the new servers or there is a procedure to migrate them from the old server to the new ones?

Hi Nick,

The license key's are coded differently based on whether or not the license is for hardware(the appliances) or software(build your own device) so they can't be swapped. Trying to insert the license for your 220's into the new server will cause it to reject the license. As for converting the license, You'd have to talk to sales. Be aware however that software licenses do have IP limits whereas hardware license don't.

As a related question, what specific performance issues are you having with the 220's and how many users/IP's are you protecting behind this cluster?

we own 2 astaro ASG 220 (v.4). we have 150-200 users who normally surf internet. the performances was quite acceptable since we had 2 modules (network and web security). Once installed the mail security, there are many times a day that we can neither surf internet nor login to the console because the CPU is between 90% and 100%. this situation is really frustrating and many users (CEO included) want to solve this situation.

Hi, you'll need to talk to your reseller about your problems, and options for converting the licenses or upgrading the appliances (e.g. to a set of 320's).

You should also review your mail configuration to see if there's a misconfiguration, or potential for speedups such as switching to single-scan antivirus.

Nick, you definitely should take Barry's advice.  Someone needs to look at your 220s to see where the problem is.  You might be able to move to two new 220s with 2GB of RAM.

Right now, your two 220 subscriptions cost about as much as for a single 320.  250-IP subscriptions for software cost about 10% more.

One other option you can consider, and we did this early on when we first jumped on the Astaro bandwagon, was to purchase a 10IP email license for your mail servers and run a separate gateway for them. That way, if you do need to throw hardware at the problem, you can size it properly for the task.

That said, Bob & Barry's suggestions should be considered first. It may just be a simple tweak of some configs or even just that your pair of 220's (I assume you have an active cluster, not HA) should be upgraded.

i've already discussed with an Astaro specialist who already did a fine tuning on mail security and web security in order to gain in performances. it's already on a single scan AV both in web and mail security. 
Due to the budget, we cannot spend other money but the licences costs. we already discussed to switch on a 320 but the project was rejected :-(
that's why we wanted to migrate on external hardware much more powerful instead of an appliance upgrade.
