vmware NIC drivers which is best to use

Hi All
I've been reading though the posts and googling on which is the best nic driver to use for a ESXi some say e1000 some say VMVNET3.
Taking into account that ESXi is now ver 5.1 and Sophos UTM is V9 9.002-12.
What do people and Astaro (Opps Sophos) recommend as the Driver.
What has Sophos's testing shown?

Come one come all lets have some technical thoughts and input.
Something we can put to bed.

    I don't have any data on me regarding the difference between e1000 and vmxnet3 using UTM, but our standard procedure for VMware deployments in my datacenter for anything is to use vmxnet3 from a performance standpoint (provided the guest OS is vmware tools capable). My next personal node deployment uses UTM 9 on ESXi 5.1 and vmxnet3 NICs with no issues during testing. UTM supports the vmxnet3 NIC so I don't see why you wouldn't use it.

    I know this is an old thread, but it's the one that came up in a Google search, so I figure I might as well update it in case anyone else winds up here looking for a definitive answer.

    Per the README at http://download.astaro.com/UTM/v9/virtual_appliance/README.txt as of V9:


    • If asked for the type of your operating system, select "Linux 64 bit", "SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 64 bit" or similar.
    • As a rough guideline, we recommend at least: 2 CPUs (cores), 4 GB RAM, 100 GB of disk space, and 2 NICs, 1 CDROM. 
        For non-productive environments (evaluation/test machines), you can downsize of course. 
    • It is no problem to add (also if the UTM was already running) CPUs, RAM, or NICs afterwards. It's NOT possible to resize the hard-disks afterwards.
    • For the NICs we recommend to use VMXNET3 drivers in VMware, or optionally E1000 drivers. DO NOT USE "FLEXIBLE" NICS  - it may leads to several performance issues.
