How to Upgrade from 8.305 to UTM 9

Hello Guys,

 As the buzz is in the air to use UTM9 we are also very excited to start using it. I have looked around Sophos website and Astaro forum a bit but confused about how to use it so please if someone can help me here.

 We have Astaro Software appliance 8.305 enterprise license with all features included. Now i am wondering if UTM9 is officially released to use? If it is then how can i upgrade my 8.305 to UTM9? I think i have to take backup of 8.305 first and then do the install of UTM9 and restore the backup? 

 And what about the license. The current Astaro License will work for UTM9 for all the features or we need a separate license? 

 If someone can tell me the Pre-req, upgrade procedure and licensing procedure so we can also start using UTM9 in our network.

    You are correct.  You'll need to reinstall from the v9 ISO (ftp.astaro.de/UTM), then restore your 8.305 config-backup file.  The license that you use for v8 is also applicable for v9.

    Exactly.

    I did a test installation last week and my license informations were taken over to UTM9 without problems.

     If someone can tell me the Pre-req, upgrade procedure and licensing procedure so we can also start using UTM9 in our network. 

    Nothing really special, read the hardware requirements carefully, have an actual backup of your 8.305 machine handy and start installation from DVD.
    Like any other upgrade before you should carefully check the NIC orders and assignments for their appropriate interface.

    Wow.. thanks a lot Scott and gsxfan.. that was really helpful. So i will schedule the activity. Take backup of 8.305, download the UTM9 ISO and install it with the same license and restore the 8.305 backup.

     A question will everything work fine after restoration of the backup (such as VPN tunnel, firewall rules, AP, etc)or we need to change anything in UTM9.

    all settings will be migrated and moved over as part of restoring your ASG 8.305 backup into UTM9, keep in mind logs and reports are not restored, as they are not part of the backup. If you need that, you should wait for the appliance migration up2date in 8.306 later this month.

    Hi Angelo, He doesn't have a _hardware_ appliance.

    i.e. there isn't a direct upgrade option for software users.

    Hello Angelo, 

     Barry is correct i do not have a hardware appliance, just a software appliance. So i will keep in mind about the reports backup may be i can save all important reports first export them and the do the migration.

     By the way Barry, what do you mean by direct upgrade option for software users is not there, Means i can not move from 8.305 to UTM9? I mean downloading the UTM9 iso and installing it on current 8.305 wont do? Sorry for confusion if i created any but please let me know so i can schedule this activity.

    For existing Astaro/Sophos appliances, it will be possible to upgrade-in-place from 8.306 to 9.000 without installing from ISO.

     So here is what i have understood so far, correct me if i am wrong:
    If i want to upgrade from 8.305 to UTM9 then i have to download iso and do the installation no matter what i have Hardware/Software Appliance.
    If i want to do the in place upgrade without the ISO then i should wait for 8.306 which is probably due this month and then do the up gradation to UTM9.

    The in-place upgrade will be ONLY available for Astaro-/Sophos-Appliances, not for own hardware !

    Yes, the in-place upgrade to V9 for Astaro/Sophos appliances will only be possible after the release of V8.306.
