ASG425 Version 1 - UTM9 Not compatible

We have an OLD NFR Unit we demo out to clients, whilst it is not for FULL Production use a 425 has plenty of capacity to run UTM 9 - it ran the UTM 9 BETA OK, but will not allow install of the "Official" release.
We Upgraded the INTERNAL RAM to 4Gb, and the CPU is P4 - 3.4Ghz. All the internals otherwise are original HW.

Are we supposed to write of otherwise perfectly good hardware ? We are not in the current recession looking to buy a NEW 425 just to DEMO the product, or dump our NFR 320, or or ASG220 HA pair setup ....

So the big question is How many of our clients are going to get the last relaes of 8.xx, then be told UTM 9 is here but tough your ASTARO branded kit needs to be Sophos so get your check book out ....

    Hi Rufus,

    Speaking as an end user, I understand the frustration to some extent, but I also know from working in this field that hardware replacement is a fact of life. PC's get replaced every 3-5 years, servers every 5-7, networking gear every 7-10. Only kit I still manage that's been around longer then 10 years is our Nortel PBX, and even that's slated to be replaced next year.

    Looking over Astaro's history (back too 2001 at least), there's been 4-5 hardware revisions and 9 software versions. During that time there's been several times where software bumps have required hardware replacement. Our vendor (and Astaro) were careful to point out that because UTM is a fast moving field, there will be hardware upgrades required periodically to keep pace with the latest versions of Astaro. If I'm happy with sticking to certain version ceilings, then hardware doesn't need to be swapped out as often. For us, the choice is more of a hybrid approach. Some branches we may keep on rev3 hardware & v8.3x, some may get bumped to rev5 & v9.

    Hi Andrew, Thanks for the insight, I guess our point is it still is a revenue generastor for US, as we have been recommending our CLIENTs to go VM wher possible, or "own hardware" as V9 was going to be a "cull" of old hardware.

    We have a client on ASG425 HA (V2) and that is a big chumk of change to resell in new hardware. That said they need EAL4+ plus CERT (Government requirement) so will be on 8.xx for a while.

    The issue for us is as a reseller we DEMO kit to end users, but it feels more like because the front panel is Orange/Brown not white, it is being shut out.

    The INSTALLER basically says Harware not compatible, contact your reseller/vendor ..

    So I rang my self up and complained ;-)

    The NFR (Not for resale) kit we have we purchased ...and  it was not THAT cheap either !

    I feel your pain, but I've got clients that purchased Appliances 6 months to a year ago that can't run UTM 9.  So I think that your good if you've gotten years out of that unit.

    As for replacing the 425, if it isn't a production firewall and used only for Demo.  Purchase an NFR UTM 120 or 220 instead.  They'll work just fine for a demo appliance.  Or setup a VM with the UTM 9 Software on it to demo to clients.

    Alternatively, build your own appliance and run the Software Version of UTM on it for demos, or, if you really want to reuse that hardware (underpowered for V9, that's why they "blacklisted" that model for install), you can remove all of the partitions from the HD, and load the software version on the box.  Of course, once you do this, you cannot use Appliance licenses on the system anymore.  You may also have to re-order the ethernet ports, easy enough by editing /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules .

    If you have a monitor and USB CD-ROM, hook them up an install the *Software* ASG ISO manually - this will let you install v9. You probably have to sort the NICs correctly, though: Edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules accordingly.

    As being an ancient (NOT EX) CNA/CNS I can feel your pain, too. [;)] I've been managing such pearls, too - a 3.11 server being up for more than 1000 days and that was in 1995.
    But those days are gone and we have to face up todays requirements.
    And one of these is to change the brown/orange front bezel against a white one.

    A six months old appliance is not able to run Astaro 9 (I still name it ASG9...)? As being a customer I would think my consultant is short of a picket in the fence. What do you tell them?
    That's why I rely of self-build 19" units since 2004 when the first Astaro appliance (P3-800 and 512MB RAM) became too weak to serve the company.
