Switching to cold standby

Hi guys,

I am running ASG V8.304 on a HP DL360 Server with 2 onboard NIC and a PCI NIC with 4 interfaces. 
In case of a hardware failure, I have a cold standby Server (same hardware, the PCI NIC is also the same type).

Since I am using RAID-1 on this Server, I took one disk out and started the cold standby Server with this disk. Unfortunately the NICs won't come up. After checking the log files on the server, I only saw that they were automatically renamed from eth0-eth6 to eth6-eth11. 
If I try for example "ifconfig eth6 up" the entire system freezes. 
I also tried to change the status of one of the interfaces as described here: https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/52/t/26771

Didn't help either. 

Any ideas what I could do? Is there maybe a problem with the MAC addresses of the NICs, like Astaro locks somehow the access to the interfaces?

    It's not clear to me why that happened, but why not run the second device in Hot-Standby?  Under the new licensing model, there's no additional licensing fee for that.

    Hi, try this:
    1. download a config backup file from the working system. (you can have them emailed every night so you always have a recent copy)
    2. pull a disk & put it in the cold standby
    3. put the config file on a USB stick, and boot the cold system. During boot, it should load the backup file.
    4. reboot

    This is actually a good idea BAlfson, I will consider that. But, I need to have the Cold-Standby solution running for now, because I am using all NICs on my Server at the moment, so I do not have a spare one for the Hot-Standby.

    And BarryG, I already tried that with the backup file. It didn't help.

    So it loaded the backup, rebooted, and the NICs were still wrong?

    I'd recommend you open a support case; that shouldn't happen.

    Do you have to replace anything from server1 to server2 in case of failure? As i get it, you replace the HDDs from Server1 into Server2?
    I guess since the Software knows the old NICs, it simply creates new ones. I would suggest to insert seperate HDDs into Server2, initiate a Hot-Standby und switch the Hot-Standby device (server2) off

    Shouldn't restoring the backup file reset the NIC configuration?

    you are right, I only replace the HDDs from Server1 into Server2.
    I do not have a spare NIC at the moment to configure the hot standby, this is why I wanted to get the cold standby solution running as I do not have a working backup in case of a hardware failure.

    Of course I could just do a new installation of Astaro on Server2 and then boot with a backup file from Server1, but it would have been nice if I could just take out one disk from Server1 and put it into Server2.
