Small and energy eficient config for Home Use PC

Hello,

in my last job, i used to manage several Astaro boxes and i really got to love the product. I used my home license in virtual box as testbench. I'm now moving to a new house and have contracted FTTH. I'd love to use one PC as an Astaro box for my home use, but i know that my wife will reject anything big and/or noisy.

Do you know of any small and cheap barebone I could get my hands on for that use. I think that with a dual atom and 2 GB RAM i would be ok for the 100 Mbps traffic with some IPS. I remeber some time ago i saw a post about some small chassis on ebay with the mobo at a really cheap price.

    I've built Atom based systems through www.Mini-Box.com for around $300. I actually just priced out a dual core Atom w/4GB RAM, 2 Intel NIC's, 160GB HDD and enclosure w/ 60W PSU for just shy of $275.

    The other option you might consider, if you plan to have other 'servers' (Linux, FreeNAS, WHS, etc) running around on boxes and can justify the cost with the better half, is to build a higher end machine around a core i5 or i7 and run ESXi on it. There's a learning curve if you haven't touched ESX before but it offers a level of flexibility not available on discrete boxes. With a discrete box, if your Atom is overwhelmed by the 100Mbit connection how can you upgrade? On ESXi you can add an extra CPU or RAM into the config and be on your way.
