Up2Date not working - ASG220 7.507

Hi all.  I have an older 220 running 7.507 with the old-style license.  Registration date is 3/06 and the expiration date is "Never". It has no maintenance or subscriptions, so it won't automatically download Up2Date packages, but I am having a problem manually downloading any of the 7.5xx Up2Date packages.
What happens is that when I try, it downloads up to 99% of the package, then it slows to nearly nothing. 
Then in the Upload file dialog box, above the progress bar, the graphic is replaced by a miniature login box for WebAdmin, which I can log into if I want, but it's only about 2 lines high.  This behavior is present in IE, Firefox, and Safari.
Any ideas why this is happening?
Am I just not waiting long enough?

    Where are you downloading from?  If ftp.astaro.de, try ftp.astaro.com, or vice versa.  If using the web proxy, do you see anything in the log?

    Is this a unit with only 512MB of RAM?  If so, this is a known issue with up2date packages on the "large" side on V7... A search of the forums should reveal the steps to manually download and install the up2date packages via the shell.

    Yes, it is a 512MB unit.  I'll check it out.
    Do they still sell the authorized memory upgrade for these units?

    They stopped selling the memory upgrades 18 months ago.  In any case, if your box is old enough that it came with only 512MB, you might be interested in a new 220 - 2GB of RAM, a faster processor and eight GB NICs.  Here in the US, a replacement 220 is only $1,275 + tax & shipping.

    If you have business-critical servers in-house, then you might want to consider a second unit that runs in Hot-Standby mode.  There's no additional licensing cost, fail-over is immediate and all logs, etc. are retained.

    Ok, I did this so far:
    login via ssh as loginuser
    then su to root

    cd /var/up2date/sys
    wget ftp://ftp.astaro.com/pub/Astaro_Security_Gateway/v7/up2date/u2d-sys-7.508.tgz.gpg

    I waited 15 minutes until the next automatic check, and still 7.508 did not appear, so I issued this command

    auisys.plx --showdesc

    firewall:/var/up2date/sys # auisys.plx --showdesc
    Starting Up2Date Package Installer (Version 1.65)
    firewall:/var/up2date/sys #
    Up2Date Package Installer finished, exiting

    Still nothing.  What is odd is that the Up2Date log shows a package installer of version 1.57, but when I kick it off manually, it says version 1.65.
    Any ideas?

    You need to fix that, for sure!

    In /var/up2date/sys, check to make sure there isn't a stub of a previos download that's causing the new one to get a .1 name or something like that.

    That confuses me, by the way.  It looks to me like my old-style license does not expire.  Do I read it wrong?
    The history is that this firewall was purchased way back when and has quietly sat undisturbed and forgotten until I came on board.  It is still doing its job quite well, but I just want to make sure it does not die without a way to replace it.
