ASG with two ISPs?

I've been using an ASG V7 on a MSI IM-945GSE-A for a long time without any problems.

I'm living in Germany, ISP is Vodafone with a 16k-DSL. Now I'm thinking about speeding up my internet connection with a Unity Media Internet over TV cable with a speed of 100MBit, but want to keep a DSL 1000 as a backup connection.

Here are my questions:

  •  Is the MSI IM-945GSE-A able to run the actual version of ASG?

  •  As I don't have space to use a PCI NIC, are there any USB Network adapters that I can use with ASG?

  •  What do I have to take care of to realise the Unity Media Connection as default and configure an automatic fallback to the DSL in case of malfunction of the Unity Media connection?

    Hi, 

    I have the same motherboard...

    1. the board should be able to run any recent version of Astaro, assuming you have 1GB or more of RAM.
    However, a single-core Atom will not be able to offer 100mbits with full protection; I've found the limit to be around 60mbits with the IPS and afcd (application detection) in Astaro 7.5x.
    If you use the HTTP antivirus as well as the IPS, performance will probably be lower.

    2. Astaro does not support USB NICs.
    Perhaps you could switch the board to a case with a PCI slot, and add another NIC (another Intel NIC would be preferred).

    3. You can use either Uplink Failover, or the more modern Multipath system.

    OK, seems I have to look for a new MoBo. Are there any dual-core atom-boards with 2 GBit-nics onboard available?

    Yes, that should be possible. I've got an Intel GBit-Nic lie around here, don't know the exact type, but I'll give it a try.

    The dual-core Atoms are still running around 1.6GHz, so, AT BEST, I'd expect the IPS performance could be around 120mbits/sec. That assumes perfect scaling, which is unlikely. It'd be even lower if you're using Anti-Virus or other Astaro features.

    A low-power Intel i3 or AMD motherboard should give significantly better performance than any Atom.

    The unofficial HCL, on page 6, has an Intel board with an i3 and dual onboard Intel gigE NICs.

    That apparently is a Mini-ITX board, but it would definitely need more cooling than an Atom.

    The i3's with model #'s ending in 'T' are "low-power" (35W max CPU power).

    A few of the mobile models use even less power, but are extremely hard to find retail.
