Foxconn freezes on initial boot installation

While I couldn't get the "latest v8 software" (not sure of the exact version) to install...I downloaded the UTM9 beta, and it is installing as I type this.

I have a Foxconn R20-D4 (VERY similar - also ATOM-D525) that I used to build an ASG that has been running flawlessly for about a year now.  I think I used an 8.2 iso on a recent rebuild (upgraded to a larger hard drive) and it booted and installed just fine.  I am currently running on v8.3.

My system is only running 2GB of ram, but am also running a 2.5 inch 80GB laptop drive (pulled from my PS3 when I added a larger drive to it).  I would be happy to help or answer any questions as I can.  I can give you more detailed info on my hardware or compare settings (our systems are very similar).  Good luck with your system.

Hey guys, I was able to purchase a Foxconn Atom Dual-core D525 for pretty cheap off of amazon.

I already had 4gb of ram, a SATA DVD drive, a low profile ethernet PCI card, and an old 80gb 2.5 inch laptop drive that I could put into it...so it was the cheapest route for me to go.

Unfortunately...something's not right. Whenever I go to install, and press "enter" at the initial "boot:" prompt...nothing happens. The screen goes black for a couple of seconds, and then the previous boot screen comes back up with a blinking prompt on the line below "boot:". It is frozen up at this point and has to be reset. I have tried all three of the "troubleshooting" options with identical results.

What am I missing here? Is this probably a compatibility issue of some sort? [:S]

what is the stat controller set to?  ahci, ide or raid?  also what nic is the addon and what nic is integrated?

Hey guys, I appreciate the time you've already put in to get me up and running...but I've run into a problem again. As I previously noted, I was in the process of installing the UTM9 beta on my Foxconn...but I can't get it past the hard drive partition. I've again tried all 3 of the troubleshooting options listed. Both 32 and 64 bit installs...same problem. I've even tried a second hard drive...with identical results.

It errors out at the "Formatting Storage Partition" part. It shows 50%, and then flashes to a grey screen with blue lettering. The last thing on the log is "i386_start_kernel +0x9e/0xa6"

Any ideas?

To answer William's questions: I've tried both AHCI and IDE options, but both yield the same result.

My NICs, as the Astaro installer sees them:

eth0: Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit
eth1: Realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+

Does the error screen say Kernel Panic?

If so, it's probably a hardware problem. Try running MemTest86. iirc, it is available when first booting from the installation CD; otherwise you can download it for free online.

I finally got a chance to try again today...and I'm glad to report that it is fully installed now. I didn't run the memtest, but it clue me in to the idea that it may have been a memory issue. So, I pulled one of the 2gb sticks and tried again...and it installed flawlessly on the first try. Only 2gb of memory now instead of 4...but it's running.

Now I just need to find the time to reorganize the network before putting the Astaro in place. [:)]

Glad to hear you are up and running.  I hope that you do indeed have a bad stick of RAM and it isn't an issue with these motherboards having 4 GB installed.  Mine currently has 2 GB, but I want to up it to 4GB in the future.

Were all the RAM modules the same manufacturer, timing, and batch?
