Low Power Usage dilemma

This is probably not the usual request, I tried to search but couldn't find much about what I am going to write.

Ok, let me start saying that I am a heavy Business Astaro user (6 devices in 3 pairs) and also a very light Home user (SSH, Socks Proxy, Proxy, SSL VPN, some dns forwarding and NTP server, I think that it is).

Anyway, I've been running my home appliance on a small factor PC (Pentium 3 1Ghz + 512MB), not when I upgraded to V8 I lost a bit performance, but that is ok for me, SSH and Socks work great.
I am thorn to switch over a VIA box (close specs to the P3): 866Ghz but 1GB of mem.
The VIA is much quiter than the P3 and has more memory, thou I lose a bit of speed.
Now the nice thing, VIA is 1W CPU, the P3 is a 35W CPU.
Bottom line, I am looking for low pwered solutions, without buying anything new.
So my real question is, is it better to have more memory (from 512 to 1GB) or more CPU speed (1GHz vs 800).
I think I am going to convert to VIA, I've been running them both parallel and I don't really notice much difference.

Any suggestions in the case I decide to use a new feature in the future and it might not be compatible?

    Hi,
    go for as much memory as you can fit on the box. 3gb preferably 4gb will make the box sing fora home user.

    Thank you, I figured I should have gone for memory, unfortunately, it takes 1GB top, only 1 slot of DDR. I also forgot to mention that from the P3 512MB, that was PC133, the VIA mobo uses DDR, so I gain speed in there too and I have 1 stick of those in there already [:)]

    P.S. I see yours AMD E350, I curerntly have a Windows box with those and once I retire that I'll def. reuse it for ASG

    hey... where do you get a VIA using 1W of power? Is this something old that can't be purchased anymore?

    I meant to say 11W. I had this old box with Windows 2000 on it: VIA EPIA-ML

    It's a Nehemiah, honestly I wasn't even looking for it, I would never think at purchasing VIA, thou it was given to me and after I googled it and read about it on Wikipedia, I decided to put it at god use [;)]

    Hi, slower CPUs will limit your bandwidth, especially if you're using the IPS, application detection, HTTP content filter with A/V, etc.

    How fast is your internet connection?

    Also, webadmin will be quite slow with a PIII or slower CPU, although you've probably already noticed that.
    1GB RAM should be usable for home use, but keep an eye on the swap usage graph.
